Pretty sure I saw a owl at the roaches yesterday evening flying through the lower tier woods being chased by 2 black birds (birds that were black, not necessarily blackbirds) . Don't know what breed but pretty sure it was a owl as it had a round head, and it was mostly white. Could well be a tawny owl?

Just received this..

Peak District organisations condemn destruction of goshawk nest

Five leading land management and conservation organisations in the Peak District National Park have condemned the destruction of a goshawk nest in the Derwent Valley.
The organisations – the Moorland Association which represents grouse-moor owners, the National Trust, Natural England, Peak District National Park Authority and the RSPB – were responding to the discovery of the destroyed nest and smashed goshawk eggs which is now being investigated by the police.
The destruction leaves only one active goshawk nest in the Derwent Valley, which previously held six pairs of these birds. This took place on land owned by Severn Trent Water and the RSPB is offering a £1,000 reward for information leading to a conviction.
The organisations, which last year launched a Birds of Prey Initiative to achieve breeding targets for merlin, peregrine and short-eared owl, have been working together since 2008.
John Lomas, of the Peak District National Park Authority, who chairs the group, said: “I’ve been advised that the police have indicated it was not due to natural causes.  We strongly condemn any wilful destruction of nests and eggs.
“We have been making good progress working closely with bird groups, landowners and gamekeepers to secure the right protection for rare species, and the destruction of this nest is a setback.
“Nevertheless we will continue to work with all those who are co-operating with us. We should not let the bad behaviour of a few individuals stop the improving relations between the different interests.”
Anyone with information should contact the police immediately on the non-emergency crime line 101, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Cunts... really don't understand the mentality of someone who does this.

Gamekeepers innit. Don't they have form for doing similar with peregrine nests?

They have form for systematically destroying the Goshawk and Peregrine population in the Upper Derwent. Peregrines are doing well elsewhere thankfully. Goshawks not so much, whilst Hen Harriers are in grave danger of going extinct in England.

Ahhh - so killing birds and destroying nests, in order so that they can breed other birds to be killed.

All makes sense now.

Pod of dolphins this morning. Was driving into work past Nigg Bay and just spotted them out the corner of my eye heading round Girdleness ( I was actually seeing how surf looked!). Luckily had camera and 400m lens in van and got some shots as they came round point. Hopefully got a good shot of one breaching but it was pretty overcast and light wasn't great. Will see later!

400mm at ISO 400 plus a lot of cropping has left a fairly poor quality image, but still quite pleased wth it.

Are they both guillemots in the foreground. Or is the one of the left a young puffin? Top snap of the dolphin. I like the way it looks like it is really having fun. For some reason it looks like it is smiling to me . . . . anyway . . . .

A question for you twitchers out there….

I was out at Wolf Edge last night with erm,sam and there were three birds we were unable to identify. They looked like birds of prey (but there were three of them so I can only assume they either aren’t birds of prey or were all young), wide fingered wing tips, totally white underneath on black (or very dark) on top. They also had a very distinctive call and were pretty impressive at flying.

Any ideas?

Could well have been lapwing. I can see why they might look a bit raptor-ish, and definitely fit with the habitat, flight and call. Reasonably gregarious as well.

Sam suggested Lapwings so he's got better knowledge than I gave him credit for.

Great to see them and great bouldering too!

Aka Peewits after the call. By impressive flying I guess you mean aerobatics.

I love to watch lapwings fly, they always look like they're having so much fun, doing barrel rolls and loop-the-loops!

Not sure tbh. There are loads of puffins on the coast here could be either.

Osprey over Derwentwater yesterday. Stunning. Part of a pair apparently, with chicks due to hatch next week.

Great pic Chris.  The bird on the left looks too big for a puffin and looks like a gull but the beak is unusual.

Galpinos - Lapwings/Peewits. The Peak is a great spot for these beautiful and enigmatic birds.

Think I saw one of the Sheff Uni peregrines on Tuesday night. All the other birds fucked off sharp-ish anyway.
