but most fun was being bitten by a white back spider in the Grampians. Result was Six hospital visits a week of four a day antibiotics & mild necrosis of the finger.

I got a spider bite that did similar about a week before I left SA (it was at Paarl Rock that I gor bit) , big hole in elbow full of pus and stinking. Not as bad as mate who was with me who got bit on cheek. Still has a scar.

I papped this handsome devil at a farm the other day, but don't know what it is. I assumed it was a turkey at the time, but after some googling I can't ID it as a turkey, duck, swan or goose. Any of the less ignorant members of the forum got any ideas?

It is a Muscovey Duck. Just wondering how you got confused - sure it's ugly but even so...  ;)

It's a John Merrick duck; quite an attractive one at that.

Somebody's Fool couldn't even get the species right so is he going to worry about an extraneous e?? Bloody Pedant!  ;)

I'm just pissed off that two people posted saying the same things I did before I had chance to press post. I would have been quicker if I hadn't been proofreading it first :)

That was my first thought, but I considered it bad taste, so went for Merrick instead (since he is long dead and less likely to take offence).

I was going to point out that a Weston goose comes pre-cooked, but that's the sort of sick thing that might get my posts removed.

What like "I bet that goose wouldn't make so much noise with my arm down it's throat."? Some people are just plain offensive.

Went for a walk with the bairn last night, was amazed to see the local Bison population (as per pics a few pages back) has now doubled, and they must have at least 50 now, in various fields now with large electric fences around them. I was quite amazed, but Kyle seemed unimpressed and fell asleep.

Vipera berus and lots of Brimstone (Gonepteryx rhamni)

Peacock (Inachis io) butterflies hibernate and so you can get them from around feb. I see loads when doing bat hibernacula surveys. This years adults will emerge from late july onwards.
