My closest ever view of a Merlin, sat on one of the roadside fence posts 100m east of Burbage Bridge, stopped the car and had a great minutes viewing.

First was a long haired long

Surely all hibernating at this time of year.

Saw some marmots on Mont Chery at Les Gets. Great stuff.

Had an Emerald Damselfly Lestes sponsa hanging off my nose this afternoon. Cracking Emperor dragonfly(s),Common Darters and numerous Common Blue damselflies on the wing, and enjoyed a good long look at a Teneral Brown Hawker drying it's new skin out in the sun. All at Peter Fidler reserve near Bolsover.

Pygmy Shrew and the biggest leech I've ever seen, both at Gordale.
Saw a Black-cap at upper two tier yesterday and collected a few more of this years bumper wild strawberry crop.
Last but not least, collect the first few Chanterelles of 2009!

Huge pod of dolphins round headland and under LPT (tide was in smart asses) saturday evening, closest I have ever seen them to the shore. Properly jumping out of the water, great stuff.

Do rabbits like hanging out by the road, or are they distributed evenly over the countryside? If so, Cairngorms must be full of them considering how many there are by the side of the road. I think I saw a dipper of some sort in the stream in Shnectda too. No snow buntings like I've seen before though, but that was in Lochan.

Some brilliant sightings while fossil-hunting down on the SW coast (of Victoria that is.) Humpback Whales, dolphins, a couple of huge stingrays, numerous crabs and assorted rock-pool dwellers (including several blue-ringed octopus - not one to pick up!) Best of all we got to watch some albatross diving for food just offshore, not sure which species but there was no mistaking the wing profile and they were seriously big!

I fished Ladybower last night. Due to the rain it was pretty quiet, so I saw plenty of wildlife. Baby duckilings, family of partridges (love the way they scuttle along together), heron, dipper in the stream, big pike grabbed a trout of about 1.5lb, loads of grey wagtails, one yellow wagtail, tiny baby rabbits hopping about. On the way back to the car I startled a family of woodcock (5 in total I think), I climbed over the gate onto the road just in time to see one of the young ones hit by a car. It was still alive, but the next couple of cars finished it off. Very sad.

last week I saw some sort of vole at the mighty Wilton  - funny little thing, it kinda bounced as it walked along. Very curious, seemed completely tame too, and stayed around for about ten minutes, wandering to and fro.

Forgot, moon jellyfish out in full force on east coast. beach was covered yesterday. Wouldn't take wetsuit off even if it was warm enough! Also saw family of tiny ducklings swimming in big seas the other day and showing a fine example of how duckdiving under waves should be done.

Apparently it was a group of these we were watching over the weekend:

I was going to just link to a picture but it was a bit too big.

Perhaps they're common as muck but I had never seen a red legged partridge (with young in tow) until last week. Stood about 50m from a buzzard on a post too, which although now 'common' was good to get near.

Cricket?

(cue joke). No, a bat.

Driving up to NW Scotland on Thursday night, apart from numerous deer by roadside, a young fox stepped into the road on a slow uphill so we slowed down and followed him for a bit as he trotted along happily then disappeared into bush.

Also another sighting of a possible Scottish Wild Cat. In the forested section between Dunain Bridge and Carr Bridge. Pure black again (likely a hybrid)and at least twice the size of a domestic cat.
