Yeah it's a baby badger from looking at google images. Phoned RSPCA and they've said someone will come out to get it.

This is going to be difficult to ascertain without finding the cable to my camera...

obviously has lost it's mother.
[snip]
Could it be a baby badger perhaps?

Its mum probably tucked into Dollys dead fox and has karked it from food poisoning.

Unless the RSCPA do come tonight I think it's going to perish. Would like to know how to prevent this but no idea on infantile badger care

Have you tried holding it to your breast? If you really and truly wanted it, I'm sure you could provide a few drops of suckling milk.

You've got very well manicured nails Monolith, do they get in the way when you're on the Beastmaker?

Oh no!!  Go and catch it and put it in a box with a towel or something!!  Don't leave it out there!!

Oh wait, this was last night, you caught it and put a towel around it, right?  Right!??

I might cry now.    :'(

I'm sorry to report the creatures demise Magpie. I contacted Sloper for some advice but he offered me a recipe that was just too great to resist so I cancelled the RSPCA callout ;)

Actually, it turns out I'm not Chris fucking Packham and it wasn't a baby badger at all. The guy said it looked like a baby Polecat or Stoat. I very mch doubt it'll be a Polecat but he's going to let me know what it was when he gets an ID for it. You'll be glad to hear he put the creature in his top pocket to gain warmth and stroked it all the way home.

I do have photos of it and will link them soon. Happy ending for little animal.

On the river below The Bowderstone yesterday we saw (amongst various other birds) a dipper, a kingfisher, and a Merganser with six ducklings.

Today we found a mole clawing through the grass on the path to Thor's Cave.

Also, a little while back we saw a few plovers running around near the summit of Glyder Fawr, but I'm not sure which type. Does anyone have any ideas?

If it was the May they might have been Dotterel, other wise probably Golden Plover. The Plovers aren't too hard to seperate if you get hold of a decent ID book.

At work we are currently building a new prison at Shotts (half way between Edinburgh and Glasgow). Its early days in the project and we've just completed a 70,000m2 soil strip. The birds are loving it!

The strangest visitors I saw was a pair of oyster catchers shrilly tweeting to away to each other, when they didn't have their beaks sunk all the way into the freshly exposed soil that is.

Also not long back from Mull where we were lucky enough to see otters, sea eagles, dolphins, puffins and some lovely midges  ;) Pretty special place.

I also live very close to the Water of Leith which runs through Edinburgh. Met the local wildlife/conservation officer when we were out for a cycle and she showed us some bull otter footprints, which was a hell of a surprise to me! Also regularly spotted are kingfishers, but the swans have disappeared after some delightful soul slaughtered they four signets they produced last year.... :furious:

Good numbers of Dark Green Fritillaries (colonial butterflies, rarish in the Peak, very picky on habitat) at Stoney this week. Having searched all over for these in the past nice to find them right under my nose. Also good to see the past two poor summers haven't hammered numbers.

I was down the dale today and got some amazing ticks.

First was a long haired long, which has been reportedly been seen down there 3 times recently, quite amazing given it usual habitat. What was more amazing though is that it was seen to climbing a rare seven seeus plant. a first by all accounts.

But what is most strange and very rare indeed is that it was seen utilising the lesser known stickus clipus. A major coupe for the local spotters indeed.

Anymore sighting of this common creature out of it's more usual habitat would be greatly appreciated.

Ah, now I know - I thought these were only seen at the Plantation?
