My daughter was meant to be coming today for Christmas but started feeling unwell yesterday. Still waiting on a pcr result but she's too ill to fly anyway.

Then in the early hours of this morning my wife fell in our apartment, breaking her right leg badly. It's complex and will require surgery. She's still far from recovered from the Guillain Barre she was diagnosed with last year (and undoubtedly caused the fall) and this is going to be a massive setback.

Not one to moan but was mucking about with the kids at flip out Chester trampoline/parkour nonsense, and managed to completely rupture my right Achilles.  :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall:

I'm used to the occasional prang that's an occupational hazard in wilderness and highball bouldering, but this is a bit of a setback.

As lockdown informed myself, as well as a lot of us, that these little forays among the pebbles is important for our mental health... Well I'm in full innovative scheming mode.

Anyone else had experience of this particular kick to the balls? :shit:

Ouchy, I saw pic and wondered what happened.

Dangerous things! A friend's son tried to do a backflip on a garden one, landed on top of one of the poles that hold the safety net up and ruptured his bowel. Was touch and go, but he lived. Had to have a  colostomy bag for a few months while he healed though.

Yes did mine a few years ago. Went to the fracture clinic in Hull saw a junior doctor who said we treat conservatively unless you are active. I explained I did it climbing and was pretty active. Despite this he said he was going treat conservatively.
Fortunately I have health insurance through the wife’s works scheme. I saw a consultant at York who said there was less chance of it re rupturing with surgery given my active life style. I had surgery and it’s been fine.

That's a gnarly tale SA Chris too.

I'll point Sheavi at this post, he's active on here and is both a physio and is currently rehabbing from a ruptured Achilles sustained from missing the pads on our last Font trip. From memory treatment choice is more to do with the gap between the two broken ends than anything else, his was small so it was conservative. Either way it's a long time out of action unfortunately.

I tore my Achilles in August at the junction where it meets the calf muscle, 3 areas of damage which the specialist deemed not worth an op!!
Seemed pretty bloody bad to me
It's took 3 months of not doing anything to get a recovery to the point where I could walk properly without pain and now just starting to boulder and do very slow short runs which seem to be speeding the recovery not making it worse which is exciting!!!
Good luck with the recovery and just keep it raised as much as possible , the swelling will hopefully calm down in a few months

Not good.

I had a go at the Edinburgh course, luckily the only injury was 4 days of DOMS in pretty much my whole upper body.

Well, it's not *always* as bad as it might seem. I've had good news today, my knee is in pretty good shape according to my MRI/consultant.

The pain is the start of some minor degradation under the kneecap, but still very early stage. Just need to try to stay strong but not overload the quads.

No surgery imminently.

So, hopefully yours is also not as bad as feared!

Good to hear some positive outcome, I've hardly any swelling (mines severed about an inch above the heel). Will try to keep it raised, but still in the independent and stubborn phase😆

I ruptured mine bouldering at Burbage. I drove back to East Yorkshire, next day walked limped round town. I went in to work the following day before going and getting it checked out it never hurt that much.
I did it on 16th Jan, operation 27th Jan, air boot till March 8th. Then physio and using turbo trainer, riding bike outside April 2nd. Started climbing again May 2nd on my board and 100 mile bike ride May 22nd.
I used the fingerboard and weights while I the air boot on and when I started physio it was using a static bike, stepper, weights and doing a step aerobics session which was killer.
I was probably in better shape when I recovered then before injuring myself.

I'm a physio and ruptured mine on 20th Nov last year. I'm presuming you've had it potted, been referred to orthopaedics and placed on anticoagulants?? Any questions let me know. Good luck.

Due to being seen by Ysbyty Gwynedd's answer to Charlie from casualty within a couple of hours of my prang, I got to see the consultant the next morning and put straight in a vacuped.
Consultant was happy enough to leave me to manage my boots protocol and see me in 8 weeks. (Skinny climbers ankles so he could see pretty clear what was going on). However, as I was still in the shockish stage of things and talked a good spiel, I am slightly worried they've put too much trust in me 😋.
Anticoagulant was a shock as it's my first experience of doing my own injections. I'm sure I'll have lots of questions further down the road, but I'll probably DM you if that's ok.

The only thing that comes to mind at the moment is I keep weighting the boot, as crutches are never quite where you need them (or I need to carry a brew), am I going to hell?
