Tell him I've lost everything, more than once, had to start from zero and I'm still here.
Even had to make the decision to turn back 500mtrs short of a summit that took two years planning, three months travelling and more heart ache than I can describe to reach; in the full knowledge that we'd never have the opportunity again.
Crushed me for years (at 4am mainly), hardly think about it now.

Sorry to hear about this. I know quite a few people who have played in junior teams to a reasonable standard (guy who sits next to me's son was in Man u academy for 4 year).
If he is still serious about football and just having to deal with the rejection. It is worth pointing out many players have still done well after being dropped. The current Prem league top scorer was dropped by Sheff weds and had to work his way up non league. It is just a matter of not giving up.

Agreed it's going/gone that way for youths still at the 'indoor climbing' phase of climbing. Almost a separate past-time now. But I reckon the growth of indoors is aside from the continued popularity/growth of outdoor climbing. Unlike most sport where it's always the same layout of court/pitch/ring whatever just with ever more competitive opponents, the natural progression in climbing still is mostly not about a structured competition - the typical arc of an indoor climber is youngster does well indoors until mid-twenties when they get sick of it and want to explore outdoors (or give up entirely). I suspect that as long as there are mountains, cliffs and caves full of wonder and drilled holds that four-fifths of climbing's long-term appeal will lie outside teams and indoor competitions.

It'll get better fairly soon - similar (but smaller!) to one I had this summer. Rest and tape and a few short weeks and you'll be right.

Maybe time to take up Total Fitness/David Lloyd etc on one of those 12 days for a few quid trials.

It's from Born Slappy - I had some fun topping out - the flappers from a big crystal I slapped on top of... At least I got the bloody problem after all that

Wednesday afternoon at work, call from Frau M: drop whatever you're doing, drive to Austria & collect M jnr from the school ski trip, he's broken both wrists.

Lunchtime today, driving to the woods to go for a walk with M jnr - because that's the limit of his athletic possibilities for the next six weeks - old codger pulls out of a side street and rams me. Nobody hurt, but my offside rear door throughly caved in.

He was in a Passat TDi, probably couldn't see me through the clouds of deadly smoke billowing out of his exhaust.

Orthopaedist is happy with them, but they keep them in plaster for six weeks these days. Iirc it was only three when I broke a wrist at his age.
