February 03, 2009, 07:42:49 pm
Apparently I now have ADSL2+ on by broadband connection. Is it worth my while getting a new router to take advantage of it? ANyone know much about it?

Very much doubt it, top speed for ADSL2+ is 24Mbit/s and your wired connection likely tops out at 100Mbit/s whilst your wireless if its 802.11/g (most probable) tops out at 54Mbit/s.  If its 802.11/n then its top speed will be variable as the standard has been ratified. BUT if you're router is 802.11/b then it will top out at 11Mbit/s and you would benefit from a new faster router (see here for details of wireless standards).

Note that you're laptop or wireless device needs to match the router.  I.e. its no good having a router thats sending out a signal on 'g' if you're laptops wireless only supports 'b'

Ah, I dont think I explained myself.. the router/modem I have is g rated, but does not 'do' ADSL2+ (its a bit old, was one of the first g ones). Apparently I have to buy a new router which is probably £50-60. Was just wondering whether anyone had any experience of 2+ and whether it was worth the bother. Looking at the Wiki page (Thanks SLackers - RTFM Tom..) it looks like the most useful thing would be the faster uploads (for online backup).

I'll mull it over,..

Will your ISP not replace it for one that supports it or did you buy a combined cable modem/router to replace the one they provided (something I've thought of doing so I don't have two boxes quietly sucking energy all the time)?

What upload speeds would you potentially get with 2+ ?

What actual speeds do you connect at? My package is "up to 8mb" but I rarely get more than about 3.9mb down/0.8mb up due to my distance from the exchange.

FOr 2+ I think its up to 24mbps and 1.4mbps upload
Here I regularly get 3-4down but only 0.4 up...

Replying to Slackline - I didnt get a router with my deal (it was extra) its one I've had for years and bought it with me when I moved to 'ull.

I wouldn't bother then - I doubt you'd get that much more with 2+.

Consider migrating to a normal ADSL provider that offers more upload - I use Nildram's Business Pro package which will offer up to 16mb down (it's gone up from 8!) and up to 1mb upload for £19.50 pm

Alas, here in 'ull we have no choice. Its Karoo or nothing.... because its a non-BT network its just not worth any of the other BB companies working with Kingston Comms to take over some of their lines. There is one other local co, but not heard anything good about them!
As a result, the Crap Phone Whorehouses in Hull report the highest sales of 3G USB modems in the UK!

Ah, that sucks - why not get a bargain router? £15 posted can't be bad.

was going to say, where are you getting this £60 gold plated router?
with 2+ the biggest advantage to me was the greater upload speed, the extra download is nice to  ;D

Result..
Managed to upgrade my routers firmware  8) (nothing from the manufacturer but Qwest (=!?!?) had an update) and its showing ADSL2+ capabilty. Of course I had to 'upgrade' to a new/different package, but its actually worked out cheaper and I 'should' be getting 14/1 (d/u) speeds  ;D

Most of the stock firmware that comes on routers is pretty crap.  It will do what the description on the box says, but in most instances the hardware is capable of far more than that, and its only laziness (savvy marketing?) on the part of the companies releasing the hardware not to provide all the funcionality (so you have to pay more for their products that do what you want).

For this very reason I've stuck with Linksys products.  Generally the older stuff is where its at (for me, newer stuff tends to use proprietrary OS's and are less hackable) as I've two Linksys WRT54g, one running HyperWRT/Thibor and the other running OpenWRT and have unslung my NSLU2 which is now quite happily serving up the linked pages (albeit slowly, but then its only got 32Mb RAM, but it serves my purposes as thats really where I document stuff) and having just purchased a PS3 its not running the uPnP software Mediatomb so I can watch videos and listen to music over the network on the PS3 (one catch is that I've ripped virtually all of my CD's to ogg and the PS3 doesn't recognise this format so I need to use some clever transcoding scripts, or wait for the next release of mediatomb which will do this automagically).

Anyway a bit  :off: but the point is, if you've a router, seriously consider upgrading the firmware.
