Matlock area conditions report
December 30, 2008, 07:52:56 pm
:D: Had a good look round t'other day and most of the sport is in decent condition, due to the dry spell being enjoyed!
Willersley, High Tor, Turkey Dip, NewBridge and Lorry Park (climbed there today - redevelopment under way again, ready for 2009) all mostly dry - amazing!
Long Tor not that far off (The Boltest probably climbable for instance).
Incidentally, Jon got on Boobs (Chee Tor) yesterday and, again, most of the sport there in good nick!
On Garage Buttress (Stoney) a few days ago - a similar story.
Yes, it's cold and hence dry at the moment, but hard sport climbing is still possible.
Let's hope the following link proves to be correct - roll on 2009!!

Hi Pete, what's the current situation with access at Lorry Park as there seems to be more fencing put up by the road since the last time i called in earlier in the year.
Do you know if whatever's happening is likely to affect access in the long run?
Cheers, Mick.

Hi Mick - yeah I know that fencing went up, but we just sneak round the side and never had any attention paid to us yet.
Maybe the recession will put the planned building work on hold, which won't be a bad thing for access.
I hope the place gets used more next year, as there is some really excellent climbing on offer at do-able grades for a lot of people.
You gotta get on Jon's 'Dark Matter' (the wall between Supercrack and Edge of Darkness) and Ground Zero (to the right of On the Road).
No 2nd ascent for either yet and brilliant routes!
He prepared a 'super-direct' on Squealer t'other day, which will hopefully get done soon.
More re-development to follow ready for next year. Bring it on!
I'll keep people up to date with conditions as the season gets underway.
Look forward to seeing you, Pete

Just about everything down here is dry as of now and looking good! New developments to report.
Don't want to divert this forum, but look on 'Places to visit' for info.

If the crag was better positioned, it would be rammed.
Hope to sort a photo-topo out soon - will post asap.

Count me in - you never know this years 'climb somewhere other than Malham / Kilnsey campaign' (as opposed to last years and the year befores and...)  might even show some results.

We did get to Stoney. Once, but it's a step in the right direction...

Very good Tim. He's right Andy - you're missing out on some great climbing down here.
4 great new routes (from 7a to 8a) on 3 different crags. More info on UK Destinations.
Climbed at Lorry Park yesterday, despite the morning downpour. Should be on Long Tor today.

I think Tim's preferred direction is north from Manchester  ;) .  Definitely looks like some good routes down Matlock way, pics of the 7c's at Lorry Park in particular look great.
