Splinter
October 29, 2008, 12:35:33 pm
OK, this may well be be one of the lamest posts to do with 'injuries' but...
I've managed to get a splinter in a right annoying spot - just in the crease below the first (from the tip) joint - and its well wedged in (I got half out and it split leaving thebottom half in). Its just in a spot where it hurts/catches on a full hold/sloper, but also gets pinched if I crimp/open hand. Bugger.
Any advice on the best way to get it out? Prodding with needles and some minor digging around with the pen knife have not got it yet. Any sneaky tricks other than just cut down until I get it and hoik it out with some tweezers?
Yours shamefully, T

Magnesium Sulphate paste, it draws stuff out, buy it at the chemist, mix it up into a smooth paste, put a big dollop on the skelf (they're not called splinters here :P ) area and cover with a plaster.  It should be out in a few days.

Also good; put your finger in warm / hot water, as warm as you can stand without burning yourself and leave it there for a wee while, they you can do the MS trick again.

Between the two you should manage to shift it fairly fast.  Try to avoid picking it too much, sometimes that pushes them back in ratehr than bringing them out.

1.  Leave it where it is.  It'll either get infected and come out or incorporate itself into your digit.
2.  Poke at it for hours with a cleansed needle until you get it out, screamin gin pain as you do.  Numbing the brain with whisky may help.

If it were me, I'd make an incision over the offending foreign body and pull it out.  Maybe.  Or maybe not.

If it were me I'd gouge it out with whatever semi-sharp implement I could find leaving behind sizeable crater doubtless riddled with infection....

Just do what I said, it's safer and you won't lose a digit in the aftermath.
