The last bit stood out to me too remembering the discussion we had after the riots:

Mr A said it was hard for normal people seeing "people like Cregan, living a lifestyle that was far beyond most people's means".

Silvio Berlusconi is officially a criminal, and has been such for the last 20 years. This is what the Supreme Court established yesterday by confirming the two previous judgements that had found him guilty of tax fraud.
Not that anything is going to change in Italian politics from now on, but it's important.

With my limited knowledge of Italian justice it seemed as if he could keep the appeals process going until he died. Or is this judgement final?

This judgement is final. He got 4 years but he'll do only one. He won't go to jail due to his age and he can choose between a public service duty or home detention.
There's a law that, when applied, will throw him out of the Parliament and will make him uneligible in the future.
A good start.
