Anyone who disagrees with the fucking barbaric practice that is capital punishment should take a minute to read this. After which you'll hopefully want to email the Georgia Parole Board to ask them not to kill Troy Davis:

http://action.amnesty.org.uk/ea-action/action?ea.client.id=1194&ea.campaign.id=11962&utm_source=aiuk&utm_medium=homepage&utm_campaign=deathpenalty&utm_content=troy_homepage_main

What a thoroughly depressing day.

(Sometimes you can't help but wonder if the World would have been a better place if Sherman had done a more thorough job.)

I'm still pissed off and angry about this.

But what can I do about it?

Sat here, as an "armchair warrior" against the constitution of both the State of Georgia and the United States of America.

It's not as if either of them wilfully flout the rule of law, or act as terrorist states, is it?

But is it the fact they adhere to the rule of law that I should be doing something, no matter how minor, how small, how insignificant it is?

Christ I'm turning into a right sanctimonious maudlin little twat. Off to the pub for the second half of Ciddeh/B*y*rn - Manyew/Basel

It did well this time! I heard the first owner / driver (if the second was different) was very repentant and put the 4x4 on ebay with proceeds going to xyz etc.. so I wonder whether or not it was the first person or some other cheeky fecker..

Govt to launch consultation to raise speed limit on motorway to 80mph.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/sep/29/speed-limit-raised-80mph

Is this even news? I thought 80 was kind of the unofficial speed limit anyway. I've always heard from "my mate's mate's mate is a traffic copper" type conversations in the pub that no 5-0 would pull you for 80 (unless you were doing it dangerously / aggressively / tailgating etc), it's people doing a ton plus they're bothered about.

All of this is moot to me of course - as a Micra driver I can only dream of such speeds!

Speed limit + 10% + 3 mph is the usual threshold for prosecution but you get 'zero tolerance' areas.

Aye, the endorsements I've ever picked up on my licence are for 34 in a 30 through Duffield one Sunday morning, was a mobile van though.

I thought it was the two white people who got away with it were found not guilty, and one guy (was he black?) who pleaded quilty (which gave him a reduced senetence)...??
I mentally switched off this when the Knox media train got bigger than the issue that a young woman had been murdered.. The whole thing is like some rather sick (because its real and not a sattire) almost Chris Morris creation...

OK. It's a fair cop. It does try to suggest I was actually paying attention to any of the media circus.

The real human story is the family of Meredith Kercher - they've got a dead daughter currently with no knowledge of how she was killed - which can't bring her back - and no closure on it knowing what happened.

And yeah, I've been drinking the Scotch again, and yeah, I'm pissed off and angry I can't precisely articulate the real issues, and the real problems here, and even more pissed off there's fuck all I can personally do to help the people here who really do need it.

The internet - it's fucking wonderful, for the self-righteous, pompous, and keepers of the one shining truth that's going to be revealed as the saviour of all humankind, isn't it?

Absolutely correct. Why on earth the Kercher family have to have press conferences which are the equivalent of waving a flag to say dont forget about us... Thank god I'm not watching TV in the USA...

I've actually read quite a lot about this case and have been totally convinced for ages that they are innocent.

There were a lot of factors that went into them being tried / found guilty in the first place and absolutely none of them involved credible evidence or an actual motive. They did themselves no favours by panicking under extreme pressure and lying. They did themselves no favours in how they came across. However, they were also ripped to pieces by the media and had no chance whatsoever of getting a fair trial. It was yet another case of the tabloids etc deciding they were guilty (or it was a good story that they were anyway) and digging up anything they could find to discredit them. We've seen it all before and since, Barry George, Chris Jeffries, Rebecca Leighton.....

Then there's the matter of how "justice" works in Italy and how "saving face" can be more important than the truth. This article from two years ago explains exactly how it worked and predicted the appeal and it's success:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/dec/06/amanda-knox-meredith-kercher-trial-perugia

The simple truth is that Rudy Guede murdered Meredith Kercher and he's in prison for doing so. It's a terrible shame for everyone involved that anything more than that had to happen.

A sideline to the circus is that the Daily Mail (Sun and Sky News & the Guardian ) all published guilty stories when the judge said she was guilty of slander and before he had acquitted her.  The Mail was the worst having fabricated responses from Kercher family members  (as if it needs repeating.... :wank: )
