Just had an object lesson on the realities of cut backs...
The Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital are "Down grading" ALL their admin staff and cutting ALL admin salaries by 20%; at the same time increasing pension contributions (Meaning a "real" cut of 25%).
No senior managers or "Front line staff" are affected (Official reason- "We need to maintain the highest caliber of management").
Result:-

Doctors and consultants up in arms (and, bless 'em, campaigning for an across the board (smaller) % cut, themselves included).

Admin staff leaving in droves, because "it just isn't worth it" and "I'd be better off working in Tescos".

One of the receptionists in the Oncology centre is now a WRVS volunteer, except they can't get enough volunteers and are actively trying to recruit patients and relatives to help.

Doctors and frontline staff facing an extra ten hours per week in admin duties.

We've seen it for ourselves, one secretary between 2, 3 or even 4 consultants. The wrong people getting the wrong appointments, people not getting the treatment they need because of clerical mix-ups.

We're there everyday and the Oncology car park is close to the management carpark. That carpark is full of new Merc's and BMW X5's etc.....

I know this isn't a direct link to a "News" story, but when you read "Frontline staff are protected", think about what that really means...
