I can't see this bringing cameron down

I wouldn't be so sure. Cameron has many enemies with the Conservative party, and the Telegraph seems to be actively campaigning against him. Last election he failed to get a majority against one of the most unpopular prime minsters in living memory. Follow that with a succession of embarassing U turns and dodgy judgements/decisions, topped by the dreadful way he has dealt with the phone hacking issue ('Where is Dave?' - indeed!).

His position as leader is tenuous. If they replace him the new leader would have a clean break from the Murdoch contagion and would also have time to re-position the party ready for the next election.

Why Newscorp's attempts to play this as only being a "British thing" wont work:

Another one bites the dust

http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2011/jul/18/john-yates-met-police-resigns-quits

Hardly surprising after the savaging he got the other day. He's not come out of this very well has he?

Interesting that when questioned earlier on whether or not Cameron should resign, Boris refused to actually say "no". He can't really be stupid enough to think that he's in with a chance can he? He should be more likely to be one of the next to go!

Isn't there a Nye Bevan quote?

"If he knew he is a crook, if he didn't know then he is an idiot"?

This is worth watching http://www.democracynow.org/2011/7/18/a_british_spring_phone_hacking_scandal
Goes over much of what we already know but I thought this part was very interesting! "There are some very interesting figures on News Corp.'s board that are based right here in the United States. For example, Joel Klein, well known to New Yorkers, he was the former schools chancellor. And interestingly, the New York Daily News reports that a business News Corp. acquired just after Klein joined the board is now facing scrutiny, since it deals with schoolchildren's personal data, New York state awarding Wireless Generation a no-bid, $27 million contract. Now parents are questioning whether News Corp. should have access like that to their children. And you also have a familiar name in national politics on the board, Viet Dinh, who is a power attorney here, assistant attorney general under George W. Bush, principal author of the USA PATRIOT Act, the law that, among other things, prompted an unprecedented expansion of government eavesdropping. Interesting connections in the United States, Sarah Smith."

Yeah the NYT has been doing some serious digging re Newscorp's dealings and dodgy connections in the US (see link above which links to other interesting stories).

Once again it's taken a "public interest" story (the possible hacking of 911 victims) to tip the balance there, just as it did here, and stop it being just another corporate corruption scandal that the politicians would really like to brush under the carpet.

Rupert and his pals are really in the shit.

Odds slashed on Cameron to go before next election:

http://www.williamhillmedia.com/index_template.asp?file=17348

Apparently they're offering 16/1 on him to resign by the weekend.

Very interesting video. I had no idea The Sun was once the Labour Herald and trade union run before Murdoch got his hands on it.

Tell you what Michael. If you want to blub, go home, go into your spare room, burst into tears, and count your money.

Then you can console yourself with the fact you're not BonioOutofU2. Or Sting.

Quote of the day

Do you get the impression they might just have realized all was not well with their marriage?
