As if there wasn't already good reason to boycott BT:

http://liberalconspiracy.org/2011/01/19/call-to-boycott-bt-over-israeli-settlements-deal/

Have you got that in Ivrit because it makes bugger all sense in English?

“With Berlusconi, the rules from any other place or government don’t apply,”

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/19/world/europe/19italy.html

Quote
Sitting against a backdrop of family photos and a small statuette of a bucking horse, Mr. Berlusconi added that his parties were all conducted with “the most absolute elegance, decorum and calm.”

The problem with Berlusconi is that whatever outrageous scandal he is reported to have perpetrated it'll always be received by some with a brief pause and an expression of "lad".

On his wikipedia page the largest section, by some margin, is that concerning "Controversies"

1c = 1.62c

All they need to do is make their 1c larger, that way there'll be more copper and value in them  :P

When I was in Oz a few years back I found that there was no such thing as 1 or 2 cents, everything was rounded to the nearest 5 cents.

The Age newspaper in Melbourne runs a little piece each day called the Odd Spot. Today's is definitely woth a read!

Friday January 21, 2011
Burglars snorted the cremated remains of a man and two dogs after becoming convinced they had stolen illegal drugs. The men had broken into a Miami home and stolen two urns and electrical gear. The burglars confessed their mistake to police when arrested.

Many shops in the states have a bowl full of pennies by the cashier so you can take or leave a few if needed when paying. Up until Eurofication you never saw low value coins in loads of European countries because they had been scrapped. Like we scrapped the half penny.

Especially in Italy where the lowest value coin was the 1,000,000,000 lire piece (which was worth approximately 2p). #usefulfacts

Dont tell the Dutch that! I think they've got more real estate to loose!

Hmm. Interesting this one (from a semi professional viewpoint..). I saw a report and later a TV program about the Palm's construction (not the world) and they went to some length to prevent subsidence, erosion and siltation. They carried out some quite interesting modelling and re-designed the breakwaters around the palm to both prevent erosion and maintain a good flow through the navigation channel. Islands start as f*ck off big mounds of large rocks then have sand squirted on top. Looked like quite a well thought out job to me (though that could just be the presentation shizzle).

I know nothing about the 'world' island complex but wonder if it was done on the cheap... in the wake of the palms success...

Either way its a great story and a superb metaphor for what might happen following all the distateful largesse occuring there...

Now the attention turns to Cameron. How much did HE know - and when...

Coulson could (of course) be in all sorts of trouble now for contempt of court etc.. if (as suspected) he DID know...

From http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/jan/21/andy-coulson-phone-hacking-statement

Quote
1.37pm: My colleague on the media desk, James Robinson, has just rung up Ian Edmonson – he's the senior News of the World executive who was suspended last month over the phone-hacking allegations. We've heard rumours that he has resigned, too. Here's a transcript of the conversation. Make of it what you will.

IE: "Hello."

JR: "Is this Ian Edmonson?"

IE: "Who is this?"

JR: "It's James Robinson from the Guardian."

IE: "Have you got [News of the World press officer] Hayley Barlow's number?"

JR: "Have you resigned, Ian?"

(silence)

JR: "Can you tell me off the record if you've resigned?"

(silence)

JR: Are you still there, Ian?

(silence)

JR: "You're not taping this call, are you?"

Edmonson hangs up.

Come off it. It's not if and when the Tories knew, it's how much of it they could / can keep a lid on.

Coulson (and by default Cameron) was hoping (and probably frantically trying to engineer it so that) someone would take the fall for him but when he found out that Edmonson was going to tell the truth and drop him in it he had to take action to distance himself from Cameron as quickly as possible. Hence the resignation.

This story could have a long way to go, despite having rumbled on for months and months already.   :great:

Yeah and well done to the Guardian for being the only msn paper to keep the story going (in this country). Shame on the rest.

This is good. The list of questions that need answering:

http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/peteroborne/100072966/andy-coulson-should-never-have-been-appointed-in-the-first-place/

Tasty!

Ah yes - from the Telegraph. That bastion of journalistic morality - whose female reporters pretented to be constituients to get information from Vince Cable....

That's the way I see it, sooner or later there's going to be more to come out about this one, its going to be very interesting to see how it all plays out.  The story and resulting fall out runs right through some of the largest/more powerful institutions of the country:  Police, Government, Murdoch/News Corp; not necessarily in that order.

Indeed, but all the more interesting to see a Torygraph blogger bashing the Tories.

I wonder what Sloper's take is on this.  ;)
