Photovoltaics cost a fortune compared to every other form of electricity generation. It's hard to even break-even before it's rotted away if you stick one on your roof in the UK. Apparently the area of the Sahara is 9,400,000 km² so covering 'just 5%' would cost the GDP of a small planet. Also, only the very very best PV cells are 20% efficient, unless you want to strap it to a satellite typical efficiency is 10% so you can double that area straight away (giving an area equivalent to four times the UK).

On the plus side, in reality they'd use concentrator systems using mirrors and lenses to reduce the are of PV they need (although that makes the required area for all the bits and pieces even bigger) and PV cells are gradually getting more efficient and cheaper.

Until fuel gets very expensive and PV gets a lot cheaper it's not going to happen without masses of multi-national government help.

From what they were saying on Radio 4's open country or whatever it was on Radio 4 or the World service a couple of years ago. The reason why it wasn't done already was down to the infrastructure costs in relation to the direct benefit from this generation of 'Green' technology. Different countries had different grid set ups and some elements were incompatible. As a result what was percieved as a direct black and white energy transfer was a myriad of greys and they needed to get the 'grey' tolerance closer to black and white as well as the direct benefit to meet CBA studies to sell it as a concept.

True, but its all about the money and share holders want the dividends now not shove money into some altruistic scheme that may take a few years to iron out and then discover the technology doesn't match up with new stuff further down the line.
