:furious: What the fucks wrong with carrying some sandwiches and a bottle of beer with you (and back down of course), even if you take the train up.

Back now, soon heading to the Alps. Weather and midges are stunning. Barely a spot of rain except in Glen Coe and the midge net didn't leave the bag  :o

CF: Charlie Brooker's brilliant deconstruction of this guy on Screenwipe. Assume it's not available on iplayer any more but it's well worth a watch.

Nah it's in Austria. Going out with a PhD student to help out with fieldwork/go cragging then joining up with people from the course to do a fieldclass. Sweeet!

Would be nice to go to Cham as I know loads of people going or who are out there already but c'est la vie.

The way they talk about it, it's as if the guy is about to cut a diamond, not cut up a fish.

Then there is the story of the mermaid who abstained from sex - she remained halibut. (sorry).

Well, I guess when you spend 30 years cutting up fish, when something like that comes along...
That mermaid joke is top.. I could imagine eric and ernie delivering that one,.. :)

How to encourage people to ditch their landlines

Absolute bunch of idiocy.  For starters there are tons of people who have fixed landlines who never have and never will want/need net access (viz. my grandparents) so why the hell should they subsidise others broadband usage.

Further I suspect that this will just encourage people to ditch their landline and go completely mobile.

More fundamentally though I don't really understand why private business's are getting the public sector to subsidise the improvement of their infrastructure?  I understand clearly that it will benefit Britain as a whole, but in any other sector competition would drive this, in so much as one company would start rolling out fibre optic and offering an improved service over their competitor who would in turn step up to the oche and start doing the same, in time this would drive the cost to the customer down.  And why the fuck shouldn't these telecommunications companies re-invest in their own business for their own good.

It is indeed shocking but would it be *that* different here?

Given the number of women I know that have been raped or had extremely undesirable sexual experiences I suspect the figures for the UK would not be so massively different. There's a lot of men who just won't take no for an answer.
