Is it only me that thinks this emotional blackmail based upon misrepresented science directed at children is abhorrent?

I can see the flaw in her plan there.

I missed those, thanks Will, they're amazing, especially the comic ones, in what way do they 'misrepresent science' to you, or were you refering the the milk one?

Reality mirrors fiction, Snakes on a Plane, although I don't think they'd have needed to break open the emergency Samuel L Jackson to deal with these critters (all < 6")

Going back a bit, Stubbs. I'm sure drinking milk can have some of those effects. However I remain more convinced that drinking milk in moderation and having a balanced diet with regular exercise will leave a child perfectly healthy while promoting good bone structure.

As would getting the RDA of calcium from another source besides milk, but that's a different discussion entirely....

But why not drink milk? Unless you have moral reservations of course.

I'm sure milk can have negative effects if consumed in excessive quantities but then so can just about everything else. I've had it on my weetybix since I was young and if anything I'm scrawny rather than fat. I never had a massive problem with spots, just the usual run of the mill stuff I think. As for mucus I can't say I've ever noticed anything abnormal there.

It smacks of scaremongering to those who are most vulnerable to it.

But why not drink milk? Unless you have moral reservations of course.

Some people are lactose intolerant and can't digest/break-down the major carbohydrate in milk as they don't produce the enzyme lactase.  It can be congenital (i.e. genetic, autosomal recessive in this case), but also has a strong environmental component and the prevalence increases with age (e.g. a friend of mine became lactose intolerant after six months in India).

I'm vegan Will; my reservations are moral, dietary and environmental.

The 'scaremongering' is a nice counterpoint to the promeat and dairy propaganda that is rife in the states.

I am however aware that if god didn't want animals to be eaten he wouldn't have made them taste so good  ;D

Slackers - Ok ok ok. You got me there. I think that is besides the point though. PETA are not targeting lactose intolerant people with that ad campaign though as lactose intolerant people tend to already be intolerant to lactose.

Stubbs - Show me the pro meat and dairy propaganda that you have in mind (I don't doubt that it exists) and I will give you my opinion of it. If it is anything like the PETA stuff then you can rest assured that it will have my swift condemnation which I think you'll find carries a lot of weight

I have no problem with veganism whatsoever. I occasionally critique vegetarians if they waive meat but are not careful about where they source their eggs from and wear leather jackets. God help you if you are a pescatarian! Fish not cuddly enough for you? However, any debate that I do strike up is never personal and is purely just debate. People can do what they like so long as I can still have my steak as blue as possible.

What I do have a problem with is emotional blackmail of parents by making them appear as inhuman monsters to their children. Sometimes activists become so engrossed in animal welfare that they forget about human welfare (thinking of an ex here who, when she was small and her dad worked for an accounting firm representing an animal testing program, had threats made against her and the family) and this is crazy. I know people whose lives have been saved by drugs that were initially tested on animals. I for one am glad I've still got a mum.

Now look! You've made me rant. I'm up for a discussion on animal rights and related dietary choices if you and others are. It's a broad topic and I'm willing to learn more about it (people generally seem better informed than me, funny that  :-\) as well as put forward my own views.
