Scar Tissue
October 16, 2008, 01:07:55 pm
I've had a while off from climbing in any kind of serious way however last week I decided it was time to get back to it. Right from the beginning my fingers felt really 'crunchy' and now i'm left with a dull ache around my RH ring finger A2. I'm thinking as i've had a while off and not yet done anything stupid that this is likely to be down to scar tissue left over from badly managed previous injuries?
If I probe the area (steady now) with a bit more pressure I don't get the sharp twinge that I'd usually link to an A2 problem nor have I had any such pains whilst climbing.
Firstly, am I likely to be right in assuming this is left over scar tissue?
Secondly, is there anything I should try and do about it? I'm quite aware that fiddling with injuries in the past has probably worsened things so I don't want to go deep frictioning the area only to create a worse problem for myself.

....that I wish you saw, Sarcastic Mr know it all*

Had the same pain after knackering a finger (damaged pulley) and leaving it to for a few weeks to recover - was told to friction massage it, and did, often and quite painfully and it definitely worked. Use a bit of oil or something to lubricate it, and work it with a flat thumb. Usual disclaimers apply as for any medical advice.

*RHCP reference, not you, and I won't put the next line.

It sounds exactly like build up of scar tissue to me. A problem I am tragically all-too familiar with. Chris's advice is sound. I've been told a good test of whether your problem is old scar tissue is if you get swelling after climbing - no swelling is a good sign it's old scar tissue...
