Just thought I`d share this with you. I am currently being soothed by this remarkably original and absorbing album. Its as if the members of Underworld suddenly became intelligent and discovered other genres of music. A proper mash up of amazing ideas and soaring melodies and seedy/ touching lyrics.
I wasn`t sure at first, but now its all over me like a rash.

Cheers, Simon.

PS What are you listening to now?

I`ll have a look for that, sounds interesting. Sometimes the best things
take a few listens to start appreciating.

Yesterday, I bought the first vinyl in about 6 months (and spend *far* too
much overdraft!) as it`s a mate`s 30th bday party next weekend and the ukb
crew will be on the decks - me, Jim & Luce - should be fun

Cassius - Aureve LP (virgin france) - house music, but with a difference,
Not your usual filtered disco french house at all - I like this review:

".... This is a brave album and a great one. It is at times very
experimental and at times straight down disco-funk with tinges of rock.
Dirty guitars, solid drum beats, wild vocals and squelchy synths. There
are dreamy synth washes with sensual female vocals, skippy live drum
grooves with princey style vocals. Sax that works and enough variation to
keep you interested. There are also moments of bluesy-soul with Peter
Green style guitar work.

Cassius have looked back to the disco giants of the late seventies when
musicians used to get into the studio and lay down fat beats and funky
tunes. You can hear elements of Sly Stone, early rap and the sumptuous and
hedonistic sounds of Studio 54. As the album progresses there are a few
moments where we are pushed into the 80`s - Electro, verging on the
experimental, elements of early house - a bit of Chicago sir?
We have a collection of guests on the album including Ghost Face Killah
and the soul legend Leroy Burgess, responsible for Seventies funk
classics `Mainline` and `Over Like A Fat Rat` ...."

The other thing that sounds great on first listen, if you like your breaks
and beats is:

4VINI - Forever Young LP (Botchit And Scarper)

This is a tribute album to Vincent J Medley (Vini), uk breaks pioneer and
the man behind botchit and scarper who died a year ago from a brain tumour.

I believe there`s a cd with many more tracks on it, but this is a 4 vinyl
LP with 8 quality tracks from:

atomic hooligan
rennie pilgrem
dee-kline & klaus
uncouth youth
backdraft
10 sue & tamsin
si begg
the autobots

Quality breaks.

Another couple of things:
Tyrant - no shoes, no cake (fabric)
An LP of four to the floor house compiled by Lee Burridge and Craig
Richards who play Sasha`s Tyrant night at Fabric in London. There is a
mixed cd version too. Not the usual stuff I`d buy but I had to get it as
every track is high quality. Mainly sort of techhouse(more house than
tech)/laid back grooves. Will work well on a big system.

And finally, one of the oddest techno tracks I`ve heard for a while -
funky and dancable, but only just listenable as it stutters along in a
bizarre fasion. Canadian.
Akuzen - no title - (Force Inc)

The original Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto version of The Girl From
Ipanema. But I`m going to have to stop because I can`t help sambaing
around the office and my colleagues are starting to worry.

The best new stuff I've heard is 'Apricot Morning' the new Quantic album- awesome eclectic blend somewhere between deep / tribal house and hip hop (but nothing like either if you understand).

It's a shame Gilles Peterson is on so late every Wednesday, he always plays a wide mix of excellent stuff, and nothing like you hear anywhere else.
