wow! earthquake in Sheffield

I've had 3 since i've lived here but that one was hefty.

I had headphones on playing halo - thought that Selina had come up behind me and was shaking my chair violently to get my attention ;D

That was well impressive!
I thought Lagers junior was running up and down the stairs or bouncing on the bed, but it kept getting stronger. By the end stuff was rattling on shelves.
The cat is a little spooked.
My heart is still pounding.
Wow  ;D

Been trying to find out details, but all earthquake-related web sites seem to be rather busy

4.7 on the Richter scale, our house in Matlock Bath shook for about 15 seconds accompanied by a loud rumbling noise, one or two very small after shocks.

I was just getting to the end of a paper on rape and thought f--k back it up back it up, I've now finished and I'm enjoying a well deserved beer.

Can I just say how much I hate lazy students who pay people to write papers for them (particularly as I found out the agency takes 66% of the fee) capitalist pigs, smash the state etc

Can one apply to be an anarcho syndaclist?

I slept through it.

Ditto, although my wife was woken by it.

It woke me up, which is impressive in itself.
I'll have to go check no Lancs Quarries have fallen down as a result.

Splendid, even if it did wake me up and then I couldn't sleep wondering what had happened. I didn't realize earthquakes were so loud

word to that. our bedroom is in the attic so i thought the wind had blown the chimney/tv aerial off. me julie suggested an earthquake so of course i patronised her; "yes, of course it was, dear". she did say she felt the earth move though.

yes my shortie cracked that joke too. you've got to love 'em.

we'd just got back in from snowboarding and had just got in bed, at first i thought the chimney had come off, or a very large lorry had bombed past, but a quick reality check told me that had to be bollocks. did actually sound like slates were coming off the roof, but i've not managed to spot any on the floor this morning.

At least we can now look the people of Los Angeles square in the eyes again.

Was all a bit  :o indeed. My shrivelled blackened Fiendish heart skipped a beat or two. Very strange roaring sound - I was pretty sure it was a very low UFO at first.

You have to remember that Fiend's mind is addled by years of brutal drum and bass.

I also slept through it which is no surprise as my ability to not wake up is legendary. I wasn't woken by the hurricane in '87 which tore part of the roof of our house off and knocked down two huge trees a few yards away so a bit of house shaking was never going to do the job. More surprising was that neither the Mrs nor the sprog woke up. Bit disappointed I missed it!

It was a logical conclusion for a half-awake Fiend at 1am!

Also in addition to the roaring, the fact that the shaking was moving through the house was rather odd - which was obviously the quake moving from the epicentre.

Incidentally, the last earthquake here, back in 2002, I stayed asleep for. I'd been to Chee Dale during the day and climbed Sirplum and got stung by nettles. So having finally got to sleep despite painful sting-ridden legs, I slept through it....but was having a vivid dream about climbing Sirplum again and the whole route shaking and falling down when I was on it. Which seemed quite likely when I actually climbed it too.

On the subject of which, is Higgar still standing?  ;)

Driud's Idol. I'll be suprised if it's toppled, I think its weathered tougher than that in the last 5000yrs.

That said, I shat myself for a while last night, waiting for 'the big one' that was going to flatten the terrace...

Fuck! I was sat up til 1am last night on my own downstairs. I thought my housemate had fallen out of bed upstairs along with 20 kegs of ale. Everything was shaking like mad. I shit myself thinking it was an earthquake and it was!

Everybody in my girlfriend's house got well worried- They had no idea what was going on and thought the house was going to fall down. I just said "get back in to bed, it's only an earthquake."

One thing though- it had a very short time period up in leeds (only a couple of seconds) so I wonder what caused it? Was it mine collapse (which I doubt, I have no idea what they'd be mining for in Market Rasen) or fault propogation (Isn't the bedrock all boulder clay in that area?) Mine collapse would cause a short time period (the full amplitude lasted 4 wavelengths I seem to remember- roughly 1 second, but I wondered if being on the top floor in a terraced house had amplified it- natural frequency).

 :-\

oh well- let's get on to the BGS...

andi - there are a bunch of seismographs on the pdf press release on the BGS site. Unfortunately they don't say where each were recorded but the ones at the bottom show something on a timescale similar to what I felt.

I can't remember anything about earthquakes from uni but in sheffield I'd say there were two or three wavelengths at full strength (each including the movement back and forth obviously), I'd say lasting more like two seconds.
