Me and the mrs are off to see a show at the Barbican on Thursday night. Managed to palm the nipper off to the in-laws, so gone the full hog and booked a swanky hotel and going to stay over and partake in some booze. Any top tips for places to go or avoid? We’re staying on Walmgate, so close to there would be handy. Probably be keen for cocktails and real ale, an odd combo I appreciate!

Thanks in advance folks.

Walmgate is a decent location for real ale - Brew York and Walmgate Ale House are there or thereabouts. Personal favourites are Eagle and Child on Petergate and Pivni just round the back of Parliament St. The pub at the station has good beer but is a weird venue. Less knowledgeable on cocktail locations.

The Evil Eye for cocktails in a rather hippy/studenty vibe. Been quite a while though, may have changed.

House of Trembling Madness do some fun beers and is a cool venue. Pivni also has a good selection of craft ales.

The Nook has some ace food and nice beers and I think may also do cocktails however i am not sure as i was there on a beer drinking stag do and only popped in for some food and an afternoon beer.

I'm an ex York resident but this was a good decade ago so aware a lot may have changed.

Second the recommendations for House Of Trembling Madness. Evil Eye and Pivni.

The Picturehouse Cinema has a nice bar with a river terrace. - has the added benefit of not being Slug and Lettuce or Revolution which are its immediate neighbours.
