It's that time of year for maxing out on hypocrisy.
I like putting up the lights - when we first moved here, we were the only people on the street doing it larger than a bit of window dressing. We had several cards that year from elderly people in the neighborhood saying how much they enjoyed it (still happens, but we know each other now). It's become more common as more families have moved in to the street.

Not very creative, but it makes me happy.

You can't see from this photo, but there is a number 9 and a Christmas tree made out of coat hangers in our living room window.
Since Covid we have been doing a living advent calender on our street. Everyone who wants to draws a number and then creates a window display for that day in December - we don't tell anyone which number we have so the kids can go out and look each day to find the new one. When your display is up, you put out a box/tin for people to show their appreciation by putting chocolate and other treats in it.
School kids often spot the new number on the way to school, but the rest of us make evening or weekend walks to find the new numbers and deliver our appreciations. This creates some good social opportunities and provides me with a good chance to explain myself or apologise for various mountains of offence that I have caused on the street WhatsApp during the year.
At the end of the period we vote for our favourite window. Usually announced via video recording from one of the local older residents.
I love it.

I'll upload the neighbour's "all -out" house, next time I am passing, and can figure out how to upload. They have a grand switch on street party, and a charity tin, with all money going to a local cause. Their bill mist be crazy, and they change stuff out every year
