Bloody hell Duncan, that's quite a site.

Great article.

The ones worn in my childhood were the orange shouldered NCB versions. I thought the plastic shoulder pads were to stop wear when you were carrying coal sacks.

No one wore them other than those who worked in the pit, but think they had a bit of a “moment” in the mid eighties. Can’t remember them being worn by the skin heads either.

I had a superior all wool one in the late 70s issued to me when I worked in a steel works.

I found mine in a bin at Coalite at Askern when we were retiling the coal hoppers. It had plastic/ rubber shoulder protector. It take a bit of beating and airing to get rid of the smell of coal dust.

Mine was a Gleeson one (gleeson were tarmac/road building contractors of the time - and gleeson was in white letters across the plastic shoulder and back patch) and I used it last in the late 80’s working scrapping cars outside. Used to keep me dry for about 3-4 hours then became a leaden curtain of compact sodden fabric :)

The fourth Yorkshireman will be along shortly.

Glad everyone enjoyed the donkey jacket diversion.

I may have posted this picture before, but seeing as I've just got hold of a copy again and Pete mentioned it as an aim the other day, I thought I would share it anyway. Me on the crux pitch of Murciana in 1990. This is isn't the free ascent but a couple of days later for the camera.

It definatly was in a magazine at the time. When I was a callow youth this picture inspired me to wear a beret, of all things. I think Andy has since said was not wearing a beret in this pic, so there you go. The power of a youthful imagination.

I'm pretty sure I was at Buoux / Les Cedres in 1990

I must try and look through the photos/negatives

Seems as good a place as any to ask: there was an ad in the mags in the late 90's, Neil Carson on Full Tilt at Kilnsey, great bicep action on an undercut. Google is not throwing it up, anyone got a copy?

That would be cool Lagers, I basically lived in the noddy-sized caravan, the one that was about 4 feet wide.
Here’s one of Gav looking at my rope after my bridge jump at Moustiers St Marie, same periodish

Ah, tights.

Where did we ever get the idea this was in anyway acceptable attire?
(Mustard, was probably taking it a bit far, even then)

Same era, probably’89.

Note catalogue poses and “Morrissey-esque” hair.
God I’d rip the piss if my kids did this.

Sorry, very dull evening in a very quiet wall, driving the reception desk.

But, I’m struck by the progression of climbing sartorial elegance as the decade shifted from the 80’s to the 90’s.

Note those perms the girls are rocking! (I married the brunette a year later).
I mean, Bon Jovi was a thing, then, and Motley Crew.
Ian is totally jiving the whole Dexys Midnight Runners kerchief too:

Perm a distant memory, Dexy kerchief abandoned for whatever the bleached fringe was meant to be. Reuben doing a shameless rip off of Fido-dido (probably a can of 7up just out of shot), Ben beginning his “Dredds”, me rocking mustard cotton three quarter lengths (with matching Reefs and Animal watch strap, and Aviators). Only Dunc is clinging to his Morissey do and Steve, looks like Steve still does 30 years later.
