New forum, how long will it remain free? Or how long will it remain as it was before with no restrictions?

I clicked on 'become a supporting member' button and saw the various subscription tiers. Another downvote for me as regards the changeover.

Surely whatever will be will be? Simon is hardly about to buy it back!
You are right... I feel like a bloke that has been quietly going to the same pub for 19 years, then overnight the owner has changed, the decor has changed and it's not even really a pub anymore. It's become a restaurant or eatery or whatever they are called nowadays. A few of us keep going for a while, until the raised prices and the disappearance of the bar stools force us out and down the road to another pub, or we give up on drinking.

Well yeah, if you go into it with that approach you probably will drop off

Well if the prices (see subscription) and the decor change why wouldn't I, or at the very least look around for another site.
Im not trying to say Im thrilled about the change, it just is what it is and its the community of folk posting and interacting that make UKB what it is, not the owner or aesthetic! The subscription isnt mandatory and if youre worried about it ask the admin in the thread I linked above

Except in this scenario, the owner literally told the barflies he was going to sell it, offered to sell it to them and they declined, so sold it to someone else. The changes are actually very minor, and make the whole site far more usable. The new owner is now selling nuts and crisps at the bar but purchase isn't compulsory, and obviously if it became so he'd been shooting himself in the foot because very few will pay. Nostalgia is a disease! Times change.

I knew out the gate you were going to be "that guy". You barely post and are just here now to stir shit. You've made a whooping 20 posts this entire year and all of sudden you're popping into every thread you can to raise flags about "concerns". Didn't get enough juice in the other threads so trying yet another one, you haven't even made a post since August and now you are on here hourly just "concerned" about the future. If you were serious go to UK Workshop, The Homebrew Forum UK, Derelict Places, Beekeeping Forum UK which we have ran for years and years and do some research on how we manage a community.

Edit: wasn't happy with what I'd written.

This post isn't really helpful if you're trying to get people on board. I think you probably need to let the grieving play its course.

Andy W has been an active member of this forum for decades. I think he's allowed his say.

I think it's obvious to everyone else tech admin that, unfortunately, it's 'you' who is 'that guy' and we're now lumbered with him.

I'm actually really struggling to see the problem here. They're not going to shut it down or try to make everyone pay for it. Not because they're great guys, but because it would be killing the thing off that they just bought. They've bought it because it's a dead cert to make £5000 a year from the Adsense setup with very little input as long as they don't fuck with it. That's literally their only route to making money off it.

Tech Admin (Alan) might want to think about whether his interjections are assisting the easing in process. I'm assuming he's posting here because he's bored and we're more fun than the Homebrewers and the Beekeepers.

I vote we all post plenty of at least attempted interesting / insightful / amusing / thought-provokijg / banterous stuff.

As soon as some occurs to me...

I replied to the administrator’s reply to Andy saying his reply was not passive aggressive, indicating it was something else. However my new account as Webbo2 promptly disappeared and I couldn’t log back in. However I contacted Simon and I managed with his help to get back on.
I still think admin’s reply was over the top.

I apologize to all (especially @Andy W ). It was not my intention to rile things up and I am the new guy, so I will commit to being more gentle with my language and focus on the tech elements.

It seemed like you guys were less interested in "corporate speak" and more interested in me being me, but I understand there is a fine line and it seems I crossed it.

I really am excited to be here so please give me a chance and let me prove that I'm not here to be a disruption or do anything nefarious.

I think I'd rather have this UKB than no UKB. Thanks to Simon for all he did for this site and the community keeping it going.

The new guys have given us a platform & it looks pretty good to me.

The fact that one day I may be able post a picture of me on some grotty new f3+ in a wood in the Peak - without my head falling off from Tech stress - sounds promising... :)

The whole site works better now. It's got a fresh look. You can turn off ads. So what's the problem? If it starts to get monetised, all the regulars will leave. Including me. Keith will setup a replica of the old ukb and everyone can go back to how it was. Its win win all round surely?

Yup. I appreciate this site is a part of the furniture for climbers of a certain age so I get it's a bit abrupt and change is hard etc etc. I also think Tech Admin (Alan) has gone in studs up a bit, but fair play he's apologised. Plenty worse has been said on this site. Play on.
