well, with my birthday coming up it's time to get some new climbing gear. this is my first harness as i only ever used the ones at the climbing centre and the only outdoor climbing i do is bouldering.

but now with the climbing centre saying that i will have to pay £3 a time for use of the harness i thought it was about time i looked into one of my own.

needs to:

be able to hold leader falls

hold people heavier than myself

be comfy

durable

below £100



i haven't got a clue so fire away.

Do they sell harnesses that don't do those? Even the Whillans did that!!

What are you going to be doing? Trad/Sport/Indoor/Top Roping/Bouldering/DWS?

Go to a proper climbing shop, try on every single harness, they should have a rig for you to try sitting in the harness, do this with each harness you try on.

Choose the one thats most comfortable and fits within your budget.

Other things worth considering are....

number of gear loops (if you're tradding, the more the better, if only sport you don't need so many)
positioning of gear loops (comes down to personal preference, but ask for some gear to clip on and play around with)
adjustable leg-loops (handy if climbing in winter when wearing extra layers on legs)

Only you can assess these though.

A mate bought an Arc'teryx R-320 (http://www.arcteryx.com/harnesses-video.aspx) the other day, I tried it on and it's the cheese, very comfortable, light weight but expensive. Think it cost him at least 80 notes. I'm going to get one when my wears out.

I'm currently strutting about in a Wild country Vision harness, fixed leg loops and 4 gear loops plus quick lock buckle. Very simple, inexpensive and highly recommended (http://www.wildcountry.co.uk/Products/NewVisionSeriesHarnesses/VisionUnisex/). Great sport climbing harness although I personally prefer a 5th central gear loop at the back for trad.

I've one of these and its the most comfortable harness that I have ever had. Well worth the extra few notes imo. And its lightweight too :thumbsup:
