mini road trip
September 08, 2003, 10:15:36 am
Might be going down to newquay for a few days this week to hook up with some mates. We are thinking of going to bonehill for a session one day. Is there anywhere else we should be going instead bearing in mind that I will be only there for one night. Also is there any where on the way down from the manc that isn't too far off route that should be visited?

if your off to newquay you need to check out bude!!
went down around a month ago, bude is great, good bouldering on the beach, you must climb 'the pinch' 7a+ and 'red quinnie traverse' 7a+. If it rains you can even check out simon young's new bouldering wall in the next village. i also stayed in a pub garden :D !! cheap, v.strong cider for just £3.00/ night, about 3 miles out of bude town centre.

on the way down there you could also check out the boulders on dartmoor, probably harder to find and expect a walk but they look very cool.
thers some info in some older issues of OTE.

As for on the way down (or back up) you could pop in to Heighley castle near Keele Uni, its sandstone, small and the access is dodgy. Good for traversing though...

F**ck Dartmoor. It'll make you bleed, and anyway, it's not on your way. Do it like this...

On your way down the coast road, turn off to Hartland. Go to Hartland Quay.
Boulder here (on the right-hand beach, looking out - a good trench with several problems.

Back to the coast road. Look on your map, go to Northcott Mouth. Go left along the beach. Climb everything you find.

Back to the coast road, go to Si Young's wall
http://www.barn-climbing.co.uk, get grades and names for the shit you've done so far. If you've been super keen, you'll be nicely warmed up, so ask Si for directions and a topo to Upton, and get in amongst it down there.

back to coast road, and on to Newquay. Smart
