Bouldering in Belgium?
May 10, 2008, 02:58:48 pm
hello,
I have applied fer a job in Belgium, and am wondering if there is any bouldering near Brussels/Leuven area. I know there's quite a bit of sport in the South, but anything closer (I won't have transport) to Brussels?
Cheers
Toby

i think your best option is to train in one of the many good gyms there, and hook up rides to font in the weekends. they always go there.

Here is a list of walls in Belgium;  http://www.indoorclimbing.com/belgium.html

The one I climb/train at (when in flemland) is City Lizard in St. Niklaas, which in my opinion is the best bouldering wall I've visited in Belgium.

Anyone know how far Font is from Leuven?  Looks to be in the vicinity of 4 hours yes/no?

I can confirm it's 3 hours from Gent. If you really go for it probably 2.5 hours.

A recent Grimpeur Mag had some nice pics of climbing at Berdorf in Luxembourg. I know it's known for routes, but it looks boulderable in some of the pics.

i thought berdorf had loads of restrictions these days.such as only a limited number of people allowed to climb at one time.

According to Belgium's top two climbers who are currently dossing in my office, there is no decent bouldering in belgium.

the fact that all those prolific dutch climbers like bart van whatshisname and jos thingimy spend 10 hours every weekend driving through belgium to get to font is probably indicative of the situation.

If font's only 3 hours away, who cares?

strange i only noticed this topic now but anyway...I live in leuven so i climb most of the time in "hungaria". Just let me know if you're here or need some contacts from people going to bleau. the climbinggym is good but it can be crowded in the evening. Most people (including sean and nico) will go to freyr in the weekends but as some people already mentioned you can always finds somebody who is willing to go on a short trip to bleau. From Leuven it's about 3,5 or 4 hours depending on you're speed. I've known people who did it in 9h but that's a different story. Berdorf is a 2 or 2,5h drive. Even if you're not into sportclimbing you should go there. It's a very nice area and getting a permit to climb there isn't hard at all. I can send you the link if you need it. Lately lots of people from Leuven go there because freyr to hot for the hard stuff. Also some good bouldery routes in berdorf and not too hard for the grade.

Bart
btw: we drive to freyr almost every sunday with the luak, a climbingclub for students from leuven (and lots of ex-students). you'll find lots of members in the hungaria or info at www.luak.be. Always welcome

Old thread alert...

I'm visiting Leuven on Saturday - Tuesday and wondered if it is worth taking some shoes for an indoor climb? I'll have a day to waste at the end so will either stick around Leuven or head into Brussels for the day if it's worth a visit. No idea what's there but have been told of the odd indoor bouldering wall...

Outdoor bouldering in Belgium is not worth mentioning. Shitty conditions as well till mid next week.
