Bouldering in Spain- Ghandia region
November 20, 2007, 01:28:37 pm
Anyone know of any decent areas. I have heared that there is a lot of bouldering in Spain, but few guidebooks. Local knowledge seems to be required. My parents are retiring out there, so I expect to have quite a few trips, starting this new year. Should I take a bouldering mat with me?

Any info much appreciated

Hi dave, I think it's Gandia (no H) if t's the one near Valencia. Some good sport climbing, but don't remember much bouldering (but I wasn't really looking in them days).

Some pics here,a nd a good place for more info http://www.theorangehouse.net/pages/Climbers.htm

Take a rope.  Ghandia crag is pretty good with Bovidon (sp?) next door.  There really isn't any decent bouldering in the costa blanca despite what people might tell you

Yep thats it. Don't expect many people will be aware of much bouldering there. Only locals I guess or other brits who have spent alot of time there. Cheers for the pictures though

there is some bouldering on the beach at denia. i never looked myself, but a stoned american i am friends with seemed quite happy (although that may have been due to him getting stoned all afternoon on the beach while i sweated it out at gandia).

have a look. a cockney once told me that there was a good chineese restaurant down there too.

Depends where you go - we found so quality stuff all over. Montessa is probably the best for hard stuff though.

Its not about if bolt clipping is better quality etc - the ask is where there is some bouldering FFS!

There is some good bouldering in the Costa Blanca - take it or leave it - no one is saying its better or worse than clipping.

We found some ace bouldering - if anyones interested, If you think its shit - fairy snuff - but some people want to know about it! :

Like I said.  There is no decent bouldering in the Costa Blanca.  Take a rope

Montessa has got some short routes that would qualify for boulder problems if they didn't have two bolts and a lower off attached.  ;)

This is my point entirely.  Jacqusie links a topo with about 20 problems below 6b+ on less that great rock.  In fact it's limestone which as we know doesn't always make for the best bouldering (save Ravens Tor).  It's a fair distance away from Ghandia which would make you all the more pissed off if you travelled there on someones recommendation. A bit like someone travelling to Manchester from Spain and then going to Minus Ten (although that's a better crag).  You get the picture

Albarracin is probably the nearest and best area to where you will be staying.  Check www.boulderalbarracin.com for more details

Its obvious to always take a rope  ::) - but for non climbing families etc - its quite nice at les rotes beach @ Denia - for a play with an awesome cave & overhanging wave of rock.

I'm not trying to say its world class - but its good for a muck about & people are always asking for area's!!

PS: Al Evans has discovered some free standing boulders & riverbed stuff that look quite good - if anyones interested you can find him on UKC.

do what the other folk say and take a rope, and go the the bovedon at Gandia...

http://www.ukclimbing.com/images/dbpage.html?id=38830

if you're into REALLY steep sport climbing it's brilliant.

The main Gandia crag is good too, and i'd have thought pretty easy to find someone to climb with on a weekend especially.

Why does it look like it starts halfway into the proper problem?  Interesting looking rock though- are those "pebbles" trustworthy?

It looks like someone has pebble dashed rock with peanuts.

However it is 100% better that stuff I've seen.  Not close to Ghandia though.  Do you have any details on it?

Sorry, no. I just came across it on youtube. Have had a google, but my limited knowledge of Spanish has stumped me.
