Great but not famous climbers.
October 31, 2007, 05:18:56 pm
This topic has been quite good over on UKC. Perhaps people here have some good suggestions as well?
http://www.ukclimbing.com/forums/t.php?t=266563&v=1

Which really good climbers never got into climbing household name status.

I put my vote for Andy Popp, Pete Chadwick, Phil Davidson (used to be famous but noone seems to know about him anymore) and Joe Healey.

Any more?

MAAAAARk Sharratt. He's great. Well he was on Saturday, when in an equestrian state of tranquility he returned from the bog to see someone trying to snog his girlfriend, so he punched him on the back of the head, when the guy turned around he punched him again and then again when the poor guy was going down. He then had an epiphany, and thought 'did I imagine that he was trying to snog her?' and so tried to shake the guys hand, but then it all had kicked off by then.....

Oh, and Mark Stokes and Nick Longland.

I'll vote for you if you vote for me  ;D

Pick up a copy of the Power Of Climbing (which I have at hand) and a lot of the newer breed will not have heard of at least half of them, Tom Proctor, Phil Davidson (already mentioned I know), Nick Harms, Andy Goring, Ben Masterson, Dougie Hall, Malc Taylor to name but a few.

There are so many to mention from yonder year, but who today is out there getting the grades but keeping a little bit underground so to speak.

Oh, and Jasper Sharpe (The Graduate)... 8a+ at 15! Legend  :great:

Pete Kirton (this is a bouldering site after all) - He was miles ahead in his day and only the oldies know a thing about him or have ever seen him climb.

Yeah, a yearbook would be funny!

I think it would be a shame to have Kirton and not have Gawthorpe too.

Pete Kirton (this is a bouldering site after all) - He was miles ahead in his day and only the oldies know a thing about him or have ever seen him climb.

Pete was at Cliffhanger in the audience, I had a natter with him and then mentioned to the Earl and a few others that Pete was around, amazingly Andy didn't know him (but knew of him of course) but virtually everyone else hadn't even heard of him. Pete is a living legend. My claim to fame is that I once out drank him.

I don't think Welford has ever had the recognition he should have. Don't suppose he fits into this category as most punters may well know his name but for taking care of business at the limit of your ability (and just volume of hard shit done) I have never met anyone better. And I have climbed with some people who were quite good. ;)

me too,

Me too.

Not surprisingly the UKC list was fucked and was more like great climbers who are actually quite well known, containing as it did such obscurities as Arthur Dolphin (there's a formidable moniker) and Ron Fawcett (I also got two votes- but actually from people I don't know/haven't been mates with for 25 years)

Houdini makes some great suggestions - but then Wales in the 80s was rammed with talent.

I'd mention Al himself (of course), Mark 'Face' MacGowan and Will Simm; and Simon Oaker, who never really got the chance to realize his greatness but had probably more potential than anyone else I've seen.

I'd mention Will Simm.

Nice one, I'd put a vote in for Will too.  A total bouldering legend in my opinion.
