Hampshire - Where to go??
February 13, 2007, 01:59:50 pm
I am from Mexico, and I live now in southampton-Hampshire I am looking for good areas where I can go climbing for the weekend.  It would be better if I you can tell me about any bouldering areas near Southampton/Hampshire with some V6 to V10 problems, or any other bouldering area.
I would like all the info about the climbing areas, how to get there, etc...,
Also if there is any sport or trad climbing around would be cool !

Thank you very much
Muchas gracias.

Nearest area would be the Dorset coast around Swanage, further west there is lots around Portland. The bouldrering is mostly in limestone quarries atop sea cliffs which offer trad and sport climbing.
Sorry not local so don't know details.

Alternatively you can go East to Southern Sandstone.

Rock is pretty soft and sandy, and not to everyone's taste, but some of it is pleasant enough.

Bouldering, soloing or toproping is the local ethics,

If you have weekends free though, it would probably be worth heading to the Peak District.

Try to get hold of the the Dorset Rockfax - this gives details of some of the bouldering at Swanage/Portland. The most aesthetic bouldering in Dorset is at the Agglestone near Studland - search Google for it.

The Climbers' Club Portland and Lulworth Guide will describe, in great detail, the bouldering available in those areas when it is released in late spring/early summer (not saying which year though) :wall:

There is also a small wall at St Mary's lesure centre. Its not too great but has a few good routes and a bouldering room, if you fancy a quick fix and dont have time to travel. If you are here as a student the uni has a good bouldering room.

Outdoors, dorset or southern sandstone are your only nearby options.

I'm living in southampton too, feel free to PM me if you fancy a climb.
