Firefox 2
October 18, 2006, 10:06:27 am

I'm running the RC3 version on all computers now and it's working well, apart from a few extensions not being compatible.

Recommended.

I generally use Firefox as well and although I know little about these things, I like it too.  Seems to work nice and quick and I like the tab browsing.

Bubba actually referring to the new soon to be released Firefox 2 that is going through the final stages of testing (RC = Release Candidate or something similar) not version 1.5.0.7 that I suspect you are using.

my firefox has started to go really slow, so have began using Safari again, its really good, but misses out on the lack of tabbed browsing/being able to see multiple tab histories

Yes, I was referring to the upcoming Firefox 2.

To those you once ditched opera in favour of firefox; You should check out opera again. I am on the fence, but my bro who knows way more than I do says opera is the one. He ditched opera for firefox but has now returned to opera. I'm still shocked to see people using IE.

Apparantly if you compare both Opera and Firefox "out of the box" then Opera is a clear winner. But once you load FF up with the extensions you want, there is nothing to choose between them.

I'm happy using FF like this - you get a good but fairly basic browser to start, and then you just add in the extensions you want. That way you don't have a whole slew of stuff that's unnecessary.

I tried opera for about 1 time. It's wack, unless you're running a massive screen it just clutters it up with crap.

Well, I just installed RC3 and things seem to have improved- we're back to fast loading of pages, which I thought was perversely related to me moving to 8mb max broadband and using a modem/router.

This is all a bit subjective however, so I will persevere and see if it's any good. The only problem I seem to have (maybe with tabbrowser) is being unable to specify a homepage; I just get an untitled tab in the new tab.

I set it to restore my last browsing session.

Only real downside is that the bbcode extension hasn't been updated yet, and I use that pretty heavily.

Here's a useful guide for tweaking Firefox 2 config parameters:

http://www.lifehacker.com/software/firefox-2/geek-to-live-top-firefox-2-config-tweaks-209941.php

Does CTRL-U for "view source" work for anyone else - won't work for me...

Is the tab mix plus extension working with FF2? From what i've read, the tab support isn't all that good with FF2.

Quote from: tab mix plus developer
I REALIZE THAT FIREFOX 2 IS GOING TO BE RELEASE ON TUESDAY, OCTOBER 24. A NEW VERSION OF TAB MIX PLUS IS GOING TO BE RELEASE SHORTLY AFTER THAT, IN LESS THAN A WEEK. PLEASE BE PATIENT, FOR NOW YOU CAN TRY THIS VERSION EARLY.

"this version" refers only to the en-us build, so in a week you should be ok.

Extensions always take a few weeks to catch up with the releases.

Tab functionality is pretty good as standard in this version, anyway.

More importantly, if I install the new version will it eat all my bookmarks?

The last update that I did has been really unstable for some reason

Didn't affect mine.

A really useful extension is Foxmarks.

It allows transparant synchronisation of your bookmarks across multiple computers on a network, and also will store your bookmarks so you can access them from anywhere in the world.

Bubba:  Ctrl+U works for me in version 1.5 for viewing source.  Maybe the website you're on, or some extension you have installed is grabbing the keystrokes and not passing them on?  I have this problem with a shortcut key on website which grabs the key combination and uses it for it's own shortcut.

Edit: It works on version 2.0 too.

Might be an extension clash because it doesn't even work on this site.

Not officially released yet but if you go to: http://tmp.garyr.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3515 it is available there - I seem to remember it being a bit of a hassle getting it installed yesterday so you might have to right click and save it and then install it from Firefox.

I was having trouble getting the SuperdragAndGo extension working properly with FF2. But this guy seems to have sorted a fix...yey!

Cheers Gruff, it's always been one of my favourite extensions.
