North Wales easy bouldering
September 21, 2006, 12:19:44 pm
Can anyone recommend any good places in North Wales for beginners ( V0-3 ). I'm heading up to Beddgelert to climb Snowdon in a couple of weeks, and have a few hours spare to do a bit of bouldering.
Thanks

Go to the RAC boulders, or over into the Llanberis Pass (Cromlech, Wavelength hillside). Lots of problems in the V0-V3 range. If it rains, there are some very good V4s (perhaps a bit steep and high for a true beginner) at Carreg Hylldrem (that stay dry). All of these places are within 10-20 minutes drive from Beddgelert.

If it's dry and you stop at Cromlech Boulders, you can probably just have a squizz at someone's guide (probably dozens about, seeing it's such a fantastic publication) or just follow your nose.

Obviously I'd urge you to buy a guide (in 20 years time you'll be able to sell it on whatever the equivalent of E-Bay might be by then for, ooh, at least £10,000), but if you really don't want to, then just turn up. If the weather is good, there'll be plenty of folk around to ask for info, if not, then just follow your nose.

Forget it squire! There's nothing but doom, torrential rain, seasonal affective disorder, and more doom predicted. That's right! Doom!
Fuck! If I didn't enjoy hating life so much I'd top myself!

Well it was a good but bloody cold and windy day.. managed a couple of hours on the roadside block it was quite wet in places. .. got the edge problem, the left hand arete, pocket wall thingy.. and the one on the right hand side... (only easy i think) then a couple round the back.. tried the one deep under the rock V5/6 i think.. a left to right traverse then out over the V3 problem on the jugs.. found it too scary to commit over the big pool of water under the block haha!
so just did the V3..
Defo have to go back and have a play on some more... its a lot different to the ol' gritstone im used to.. i've even got fingertips left! haha! was nice to climb on different rock!
