Aww, now you've gone and hurt my feelings...

Seriously though, the rock is all pretty sound and I'm pretty sure some of these will be great problems. I guess quarries are rarely that easy on the eye, but the climbing can make up for that.

...Thus ends my Sermon from the church of quarried grit.

Found this at Egerton Quarry. The line up the centre looks solid. I've highlighted what might be the holds (I can't see much else). Two crappy sidepulls to pull onto a very high foothold. Then a small flat crimp above and an undercling just down and right. Getting to here is definitely doable, though it's the next bit that will be the crux - somehow reaching the small crimp a metre above and getting a foot up (once here it's a slab and the top should be nearly in reach).

"Quality mate" christ and i thought the central belt of Scotland had its fair share of manky urbane quarries, Dumby is like the Buttermilks compared to this.

i'm not sure i'd bother with that if it was at the end of my street.despite the nearest crag being 40 miles away.

  It's an acquired taste. Egerton is a huge quarry, with some awesome pieces of rock and some rather less inspiring areas. But I don't really mind manky holes in the ground. If the climbing is good, I'm happy. And the sky is the same wherever you choose to chill.    :8)

Whilst hinting at intriguing things you've also baffled me on several counts. :?

1.Is secret line a route or a problem?
2.Who's the enigma?
3.Is Egerton's last great problem the one in my photo, or the one you are talking about, or something else?

You big bullies. Just cos the rock in my area has an unsightly hunch, a little acne and poor skin... I'll have you know quarries have feelings too. :(

Maybe it's just me, but I really love the cleanness of some of the lines on quarried grit. Rounded things are all very nice, but a perfect quarried line can be so much more striking. Some of those aretes at Millstone for instance. Admittedly most of the time there're just a few too many cracks and often a little too much dirt, and often the best bits of rock are at the top in the territory of ropes and other such devilry, but one of these days I'll find the perfect problem hidden in the depths of a grotty little hole...and then, oh yes, and then I shall take over the world.   Mwahahahahahaaaa.

...But I love the non-lines too, just because what at first looks like nothing often evolves into a really satisfying sequence of moves, somehow more pleasurable because it's so much more unexpected. Or am I talking about steep limestone now?

p.s. Oh, And when I said the central line was solid, I meant in terms of difficulty. I wasn't implying any of the rock was loose. Not in that particular section anyway.

Do I sense sarcasm in your tone?   The corner to the left is the start of a VS called Insipidity and the arete to the right is the start to an E3 called One Minute to Midnight, though as you can see, neither seem to have been climbed for some time. Last year saw a fair amount of route cleaning going on, but it's a huge place and doesn't receive the sort of traffic that quarries in the peak do.

He wouldn't be much of an enigma if y'all knew who he is....

....though he's currently playing Louise to Pof Daddy's Thelma, if that helps.

Surely Egerton's LGP is a tie between the CB area arete and the wall on the prow?? Both very impressive.

Good place Egerton, despite that photo. Quality routes on Wood Buttress. Robin stop dicking around and get cleaning these things...

Haven't checked that area out yet. It's a big place.

Spent 2 hours last week chopping brambles at Egerton. I've also removed a binbag full of beer bottles (bloody scallies) from Healey Nab, done battle with the root mass from hell at Lower Montcliffe, debrambled a large area of Lester Mill, pulled heather and earth from a slab at Roundbarn (via my head), scrubbed red lichen, green lichen, white lichen, black lichen and even lichen coloured lichen from Egerton, Cadshaw, Wiltons, Lester Mill, Stronsey, Healey Nab etc. I reckon I'm doing my fair share of cleaning.

And no, I haven't cleaned anything you'd need a rope for. Not my bag, baby.
