Thought I'd follow up on this.

Ended up having a blood test which did show I was pretty deficient. Bloods came back much better last week and this winter has been among the most bearable in memory despite significant stressors. Ended up just taking standard OTC tablets, daily.

Anecdotally, I've slept better, improved mood, fatigue and seemed to recover more readily from training. Aware much of this could've been affected by related cofactors but I think I'll continue to take supplements each winter.

Hope this helps anyone that might be interested.

Edit: and thanks to anyone who offered advice regarding the topic

Okay, this story about a retracted vitamin D study is fascinating: (thread)

N.B. The status of this one individual paper says nothing about whether or not vitamin D supplementation might be helpful with Covid-19, or helpful in general. I take vitamin D and think there's a decent case for saying that it's a bad idea to have a vit D deficiency in general, and especially when there's a pandemic respiratory illness.

But it is fucking wild that this paper caused a big stir and then several Indonesian researchers investigated and found that the purported authors ... appear not to exist.

"To cut a long story short...the authors may not exist, the institution has no record of the study, no ethics application seems to have been filed, and at the time the study was written in the region it supposedly came from there were only 2 confirmed COVID-19 cases".
