GriGri+
January 27, 2017, 12:17:42 pm
Looks like they're bringing out a new GriGri, advertised with possibly the most French video imaginable:

https://www.petzl.com/GB/en/Sport/video/WELCOME-TO-THE-GRIGRI-FAMILY-

More here. Safer and more hardwearing apparently. Optimised for 8.9mm to 10.5mm which is a wider ranmge than the current 2 model.

That's it's full range but according to Petzl it's only optimized for 9.4 mm to 10.3. They haven't published the full range of this new one but assuming they're being consitent in their terminology it looks like this could be better on thinner and thicker ropes.

What are people's preferences for the GriGri as in Original / 2; despite being smaller (and a brighter colour) I've never like the 2 as much (even on really skinny ropes). The small handle makes lowering (smoothly) trickier IMO.

Anyone tempted to source a Mk 1 by buying a Grillon lanyard should be aware the cam is not sprung, which makes paying out awkward.

My first GriGri was a 2 and I've only rarely used the original, but I agree lowering with the 2 is not the greatest experience even with plenty of practice.

Neither is giving slack to clip! I'm still getting dirty looks for jamming it at the wrong moment...

I prefer the grigri2 for most applications. I find it easier to feed slack (i use the "8a.nu method") and to lower myself one-handed on a fixed line when routesetting.

I prefer the original for birthday parties, for reasons that are a little long to explain (cue: you can easily lower a kid without using the handle. Harder on a gg2)

I haven't used my 1 since I got a 2. I anticipated still using it for thick ropes and for jugging/ abseiling statics but no one uses thick sport ropes anymore and the shorter body of the 2 just makes it nicer for jugging with. I don't have problems lowering or giving slack.
