Movement terms in climbing, a list?
July 22, 2004, 11:37:41 am
Am trying to gather as many obscure and not so obscure terms for movements and techniques in bouldering/climbing.
Any one have any suggestions?

So far I have:

BUMP to go again with the same hand.
SMEDGE a sloping edge.
UDGE to adjust on a hold.
CUSP to wrap the plam of the hand.
YARD a long reach.
GASTON sidepulling with the elbow pointing away from the body.
SCRUM  to scrape the foot ie. not to put it in a particular place.
SHARE/MATCH to swap hands on a hold.
BICYCLE using one foot to pull and one to push.
LANK to use your reach.
SPRAG using the thumb in opposition.
LARGO to jump for the starting hold.
AU CHEVAL squeezing with arma and legs.
CHICKEN WING an arm lock in a crack.
FIGURE 4/YANIRO to place the back of the opposite side knee in the crook of the arm
FIGURE 9/YANIRO to place the back of the same side knee in the crook of the arm

Save always used the terms Mold or Pistol Grip rather than Cusp, and Scum rather than Scrum.
 Gypo - Egyptian
Drag - Open hang small hold
 Flag - Drop leg under
 Paste - Stand-on/Smear

All the normal ones?  Pinch, crimp (closed & open), dyno, slap, eygptian, etc.

Quote
SHARE/MATCH to swap hands on a hold.

I'd also say this was to put both hands on a hold not necessarily swap hands.

Gay legs - I think it's fairly obvious what this means
Quick hands - I've never worked out what this means but it sounds good.
Fred - I think everyone understands this.

a lunge is like a dyno but generally where your feet stay on. the shortarse method on deliverance is an example of this i reacon (cue torrent of abuse).

pop is a little slap, stab, one of those move you could do static if fresh enough.

thruch - you know what this is

peddal - you know, treadmiling your feet up, looking for footholds, feet coming off etc

spock -one of those split finger holds or adjacent pockets.

also forgot snatch - which is where you going dynamically for a hold thats quite close to you, but for whatever reason (i.e. badly placed footohlds) you've still got to slap for it to stay on.

Aaah, the gay leg, I didn't know the term had spread so far. The ultimate dropknee when you end up pulling up using the top of your foot, Sick - the prob left of Piss being the classic example.

It means to touch off something other than the rock while climbing ie. to cut loose and hit a spotter mat etc. cheating really.

Aparently Fred Nicole hit his spotter (his girlfriend) when he cut loose off the crux of the Dominator in Yosemite, he hit her so hard she fell to the ground and he continued on up. APARENTLY.

(I made the expression up - I am very proud)
