Ireland round up 2013
January 23, 2014, 05:39:45 pm
Apologies all, this is something of a plug. Nevertheless, it may be of interest to some - particularly because of the efforts of one Michael Duffy, who climbed Ireland's first 8B+ last year, amongst other things that shouldn't be allowed to slip away under the radar. It would be great to see some capable sorts making the trip over to try some of his problems.

Bit surprised this hasn't attracted more comment. Did people already know that there was a 8b+ in Ireland or is that they aren't interested? Surely a FA of an 8b+ is big news especially considering it's in a backwater like the sodden emerald isle.

I tried to read it on the iPad last night but couldn't, and forgot today until now. I think it's a brilliant idea. John Watson tried a print version of something similar for Scotland a few years back, but it didn't prove popular so he hasn't bothered since. I think the e format is fine, and printing wouldn't add anything.

That is the very best picture I could get hold of I'm afraid. I think it's a screen grab of some footage, which hopefully means that'll surface at some point.

Cheers chaps. The idea behind print wouldn't be a full blown shed full of magazines, just a small run to give those who really want a paper copy, and select institutions (walls, training centers), a few. I may just stick with the ezine, but a good number of folk seem keen on print.

Great stuff, hope it takes off.

Is the 7b at Carrickfinn that seeping arête at the left hand side that was a project in Dave's guide?

Atlantic Ocean Wall has been climbed several times, prior to the recent repeats.

No that's 3 Star Arete. The line Danny is talking about is to the right, past the corners on the tall face with the diagonal breaks.

Thanks Dave, is there an updated topo anywhere? Did 3 star arête get climbed?

It did. 7a I think.
The topo is in the second edition of the guide http://threerockbooks.com/index.php/bouldering-in-ireland/

Cheers! Re: Atlantic Ocean Wall - will edit the info. I would say the 3* arete is 7A+, even though I initially thought harder - I almost did this years ago, but when you climb alone you often get the impression that things are harder than they actually are. Shine On looks totally amazing - it should be on anyone's 7B list.

EDIT: Shine On should be Let It Shine - getting somewhat confused with the oft mentioned Stanage route.
