Fitting a fingerboard to a Door Gym pull up bar
February 13, 2013, 02:26:54 pm
Anyone successfully fitted a fingerboard to a Door Gym pull up bar before?

I've seen some people have hung Rock Rings from the bar, but I was hoping to work out a way of attaching a Moon board or Beastmaker.

Been covered a few times, e.g.:

Cheers Ian. I spotted these threads before posting, but the methods used are for a Power Bar as opposed to Door Gym bar.  Unless i'm mistaken, but being a different design I don't think the same solution will work.

I thought a similar solution would work, mount the BM on ply, fashion a bracket to hook over the bar and something to brace the whole lot to stop it swinging through the frame.
Would a Power Bar not work for you?  Assume you're in a rented place and don't want to drill holes?

Thanks Ian. I too thought a similar solution would work, but it seems
"something to brace the whole lot to stop it swinging"
is definitely the tricky bit. I previously mounted the fingerboard on ply and attached it to the bar, even cut the ply wide enough for it to rest against the doorway but that didn't help. So I apologise for my vagueness, for the sake of clarification, I'm am particularly looking for "something to brace it" bit :)

And yes, usual problems of rented accommodation etc.

I envisaged cutting the ply wide enough to fit fairly snugly within the door frame and attach a rod/wooden baton beneath the FB which braces against the frame.
Or if the ply needs to be wider than the frame then screw on some internal batons on the back to stop it twisting?

Sounds like your having a right mission, you could try something like this if you've got the ply already or failing that I can point you in the right direction to buy one   :jab:

Having read all these threads on mounting boards, it does worry me when you see a few of them that turn that look right rickety jobs, hanging about on monos on a wobbly board...  :badidea:

Good knowledge, cheers Ian. I'll see if I can fashion something along these lines.

I have a similar pretty shonky pull up bar and I hang Crusher rock ring type things from it to do finger hangs. I don't think mine is stable enough at all to bother with a full rock ring set up..

Elegant solution that. Do you need to remove the door to hang it properly?

I have my Beastmaker hanging from exactly the same pull up bar. I'll take some photos later today and post them up but it's a pretty simple set up. The Beastmaker is mounted to a piece of plywood wider than the door frame with two holes drilled up top, threaded some cord through it and tied it off on the U shaped sections of the pull up bar. It doesn't look like it would be stable but once you've got your weight on it, it's absolutely fine. I wouldn't try campusing between holds, however.

Success: I spotted on Jen Wilby's blog she has managed to fit a fingerboard to her Door Gym bar. For anyone else wondering how to do this, Jen has kindly posted detailed pics here http://climbersblogs.blogspot.co.uk/2013/02/attaching-metolius-wood-grips.html
