Clubs in sheffield
July 26, 2012, 11:38:35 am
So - where does one go in sheffield (saturday night) these days to listen/dance to some cool tunes (preferably along a techno theme, but house/d&b acceptable) without the threat of a punch on the lip from some arse'oled bloke 18 pints the worse or being mauled by some slapper who's pre loaded on cheap vodka and looks like some reject from TOWIE.

Seems most of the clubs I frequented as a youth have burnt down or closed down

The Tuesday Club is still going strong, usual summer hiatus though, but back in September with a good line-up.

In most places the the dickhead/non-dickhead ratio seems too high, plenty of good pubs but the clubs are, in the words of clay davis, sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeettt. Are you just in town for the night? If not, the monthly Sheffield Techno Institute's nights at the Redhouse are a happy affair. Depending on what night they have on your best bet is The Harley on Glossop road, I've had some good times there before I contracted shallwejustgohomeandgetatakeaway-itus

There are nights here and there, but nothing like there used to be (although I don't go out clubbing much anyway these days).

See whats on at The Plug and DQ's.  You also get the Valve Sound System doing semi-regular events at the Octagon*

University security are very tight now, we stood in a queue for 15 mins a good few months back for one of the Valve nights whilst they were sniffer dogging and almost stripping everyone in front of us (socks and shoes off, very attentive patting down).  After grumbling to ourselves and looking pissed off we were told we didn't have to go through the checks, presumably as we looked ten years older than the the rest, more fool them   Once in & up on the balcony it was clear people were wising up and chucking stuff into the hedges as they approached the entrance, although not everyone as we saw someone being chased out of the front door followed by security, he had a good lead on them though, so hopefully got away.

Mate was less lucky the other week at a Saturday night Tuesday Club where Andy C was head-lining as he stupidly stashed stuff in his tobacco pouch and wasn't allowed in, fortunately they didn't hand him over to the police.

From when I lived in Sheffield I would recommend the limit club on a friday night, and probably the Palais on a Saturday night- I'd then go onto either CJs or the Saddacca for an after party. (Disclaimer it may have been a few years since I lived in Sheffield)

Ah - yes - the limit and the palais - Good times. (only went to the limit once though, just before it shut)

Only on for one night, got a pass out and free weekend with an old mate whos up from london.  Crossed my mind that we could actually go out clubbing if we wanted.

Seems I'm to be thwarted on the ground that there are no decent nights on on saturday.

There's some Ibiza thing on at Plug - whats Plug 'actually' like - seems like it could be a bit beery/townie.

Sam there's a club called Penelope's, no idea where it is but I've heard reports of quality house being played.

I've also heard of a night called Kabal but again, no idea when/where...

It's next to/underneath the Odeon cinema at arundel gate, i've only ever been to some eastern euro night which mainly consisted of people taking it in turns jumping over piles of bags

Isn't Sheff a clubbing dead spot when the students are away? Anyway Sam it would be rubbish, full of kids and noise. You are much better off going to the pub.

NY Sushi used to be great in the summer, tended to only have residents playing but was never as rammed and always cheaper entry.

http://www.residentadvisor.net/event-search.aspx  This might help, but it's a bit vague as you can only search the entire midlands.

Where I discovered DnB. Was so good being able to sidle into the DJ booth and watch 'em at work too.  Chris Bibby was dead friendly.

Plus my all time favourite DJ, Andrew Weatherall regularly spun decks downstairs.  :2thumbsup:

I regret never going to any of the events at the ski village now.  :'(
