Rocky Mountain recomendations
June 30, 2011, 09:18:46 am
Hi all,
Am heading to the Rocky Mountains and Yellowstone areas for a 3 week road trip this August (yup - busiest time to go!) Was wondering for some recommendations of good venues to get some bouldering in in the RMNP area, also Yellowstone if there is? Have heard mixed reviews of Boulder but if the climbing is worth it would consider staying there for a few days rather than RMNP. Mainly climb up to V5/V6 on a good day so will prob need an area in the lower grade regions, also poss looking into doing some sport climbing, onsight grade F6c/F6c+

Also, any guidebook recommendations would be fab!

Thats all, not to demanding I hope!

Thanks!

Where's Blunk when you need him?

Horsetooth Reservoir near Fort Collins looks great, but not actually been there.

Bouldering on Flagstaff Mountain near Boulder is OK, wasn't crazy about roack quality though.

Eldorado will be roasting at that time of year, some cooler sport climbing in Boulder Canyon.

There is some bouldering in Wyoming written up in Stone Crusade, but never actually climbed any of it.

There are tons of guidebooks to climbing in the area, mostly of the tedious Falcon type. I would get to some one of the larger climbing shops (Neptune is probably best, but REI also has a good selection) in Boulder and have a look to see which ones will be useful, rather than buying them at inflated prices over here.

Read Colorado bouldering enthusiast Peter Beal's blog and/or email him.

Isn't Rifle a bit of a detour? Not sure there's lot in those grades there either. I think Sink's Canyon in Wyoming might be worth a look at instead.

But if you were going to Wyoming and Jellystone you would go North (on the I83 I think?). Unless you went to Utah and then round the back. Threading through the Rockies N from Rifle would be a right pain.

not been but ferret, who has, says RMNP has a couple of V8's to warm up on then pretty much into the double digits. coupled with the walk in would probably not be the best use of climbing time. mount evans is also supposed to be good, with a lot more easier probs than mentioned above. always wanted to go to horsetooth to do john gill's pinch arete

If you take that approach (s?)he could go almost anywhere! Shelf Road is allegedly good for easier sport routes, near Colorado Springs and will be pretty damned hot.

Anyway Stone Crusade lists a few spots in Colorado and Wyoming, worth a look. Apparently Sinks Canyon has bouldering too, and Sherman mentions some bouldering in the Grand Teton (Big Tit!) National Park.

'He' is a 'She'  :whip:

Def agree America is all about the road trips however dont want to spend too many days driving! Think the plan is rock up at Neptune Mountaineering and sort it out from there...adds an element of surprise to it I suppose! Although liking the look of Rifle.

Thanks again for all the comments!
