....but I just find myself thinking about going and listening to some old In Flames....

What would you recommend as the best albums to get into In Flames, sound like they may be my cup o tea

Come Clarity if you like it a bit new school
i.e.

Clayman if you like it a bit older school
i.e.

The albums inbetween - Coundtrack to your escape and Reroute to Remain (the album that got me into them) are also good
the stuff after come clarity, whilst good, seemed to be treading old ground to me...

Know there are some electronica fans on here somewhere so my single (from 2008, but discovered in 2010) is Trente Moller - Take Me Into Your Skin (on downtempo - minimal electronica)

Bollocks forgot about that. Four Tet just dropped out of top 10, replaced with Trente Moller - Into The Great Wide Yonder.

Agnes Obel - Philharmonics
The National - High Violet
Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse
ASS - Salt Marsh

I also listened to the Band of Horses album a lot, but it's nowhere near as good as the two albums before it.

Top albums for me have been.

High Violet - The National
The Wild Hunt - Tallest Man On Earth
Swim - Caribou
I Speak Because I Can - Laura Marling

Also discovered Furry Lewis this year for all those early delta blues fans. Gritty.

my favourite has been an oldie

The Dwarves Must Die by the dwarves, because it's both good and shit (in a good way) in equal measures

Have also just downloaded Trial and Terror by Battle of the War Machines, streamable here http://battleofthewarmachines.bandcamp.com/album/trial-and-terror check it out if your into your noisy guitar shizzle. I used to be in a band with their drummer and am well impressed by the quality/variety of songs/ production value on their album

Sir, you do intrigue me. I shall depart forthwith, acquire said recordings, listen and opine.

Thanks for the Godspeed ticket Andy, a real shame I had to leave early to catch a train.

I've not really been ferreting out new music this year but have been happy mining the archives and enjoying familiar sounds from the past. Stuff that's caught my ear and stood up to repeated listening this year include:

Bob Mould - Life and Times (technically 2009 but it was late in the year)
Caribou - Swim
Four Tet - There is love in you
Darkstar - North
Several individual tracks off the Magnetic Man album

I'll be checking out some of the recomendations on this thread - thanks.

Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip - The Logic of Chance (quality through and through)
Massive Attack - Heligoland (it's like Mezzanine all over again)
Plan B - The Defamation of Strickland Banks (music I never thought I'd like)

Brain too flu adled to think/remember anything else that I bought.

Like everyone, Caribou
Massive attack - Heligoland
Laura marling (though I think my crush on her may sway this a bit)
Jim jones revue - burning your house down (suprised this hasn't been mentioned yet)
Mostly I've listened to Flaming lips for the same reasons as mr popp - AMAZING set at greenman.

I can't believe it. I've been out of the loop regarding downtempo indie/whatever you wanna call it for a while. I used to be a big Sparklehorse fan, so when checking out links to the Dangermouse and Sparklehorse album, I was totally gutted to read that Mark Linkous is dead. To then find out that Vic Chestnutt was also dead, who has also produced some brilliant music, well it's ruined my day. Along with the late, lamented Elliott Smith, that's 3 of my all time favourite musicians off to the great gig in the sky. RIP guys. :(

I thought your username was "damn" then...

Caribou album is brilliant. The remix album is also great! Sun is probably my favourite track. Here's a remix my mate did:

2. Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Manchester: huge

What's this? I was at the gig (assuming it was the one about a month ago) but no idea of a release of that name - must be something other than a Constellation release...

Edit: oh arse I really should read the full post first - was an awesome gig - good to see them back on the road for the first time in the best part of a decade.

Massive Attack - Heligoland - (it's like Mezzanine all over again)

Brain too flu adled to think/remember anything else that I bought.

Just put Heliogoland on for the first time in ages to see if this is really possible but given that Mezzanine would be one of the first three choices for my Desert Island CD's I am slightly sceptical at the minute.

I agree, but Heligoland is still awesome.  Mezzanine is usually my first choice for best recording ever made ever.  Ever.  When asked that question, which happens all the time obviously...

My favourite CD of last year was Dave Seaman Global Underground 39 Lithuania. Flawless progressive house of the highest calibre. Sublime in every aspect.

I think it actually came out late 2009, but I really got into Bitte Orca by The Dirty Projectors.

A truly mind blowing album.

On a slightly more up to date tip: a mate of mine talked me into going to see The Walkmen in Manchester about a week ago. I'd not really come across them before, but did a crash listening course in the month before the night and it clicked. Anyway, it turned out to be one of the best gigs I've ever been too. Amazing stuff.

This is a good place to start if you're not familiar, although a lot of their other stuff is more mellow:

Great thread- getting some great new music out of it. Lots of stuff people are mentioning are bands that come up as suggested artists in Spotify based on what I normally listen to, I should pay more attention to them...

My top albums of 2010....

The National - High Violet
Kanye - My Dark Twisted Beautiful Fantasy
These New Puritans - Hidden
Foals - Total Life Forever

Probably some more...

Didn't seem a vintage year, but Maiden's Final Frontier was full of prog-metal goodness
