Strange Arm Strap Thingys
September 29, 2010, 01:33:51 pm
Of late I've seen a few people sporting some strange arm strap type things at the top of their forearms, does anyone know what they are/for?
I assume they're not some kind of masturbatory aid but I could be wrong.....

It means they are the captain of the team.

The black bands indicate that they are in mourning. Usually for someone connected with the team or with the sport in general.

Or did you mean a brassard ?

does anyone make a stealth rubber brassard?

It's called an arab strap. Ask for one at any climbing shop, they don't keep them on the shelf. Improves stamina so means you can stay up for longer.

Nah, sorry for any confusion.
The one I mean are worn by climbers, just below the elbow and look like they must support your forearm muscles or something. They're not like captains/mourning/brassard straps.....

Maybe they ARE a masturbatory aid and I've just been missing out all these years..

Ahhhh another under-the-counter training aid eh?? Should I ask for a tea-bagging while I'm at it??

Actually it was one of these I was meaning:

instead of being a lazy twat I decided to employ the magic of google.

Is there any SCIENCE that says that these things can prevent/cure the dreaded Font Elbow?

Obviously I understand that it could only work as part of a calorie controlled diet and a press up rich exercise regime.

BAND-IT™. This therapeutic elbow band helps relieve and prevent pain from tendonitis, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, and more. It works by compressing the flexor, extensor and supinator muscles to alleviate soreness and swelling. Plus, it allows natural movement without cutting off circulation. Hand washable. One size fits all.

Apparently it changes the way the tendon lies and so allows any overuse injury to rehab. Or something.

oooooh started a little debate without even trying!

I suppose its one of those things where if it works for you then great, if not then they're shite.

Okay, thanks, I've read that but can't see any mention of Font elbow. This is going off-topic now but as I understand it it's neither tennis nor golfer's elbow. I have never been to Font, would love to go, but I suffer from issues with my Brachialis (not Brachioradialis) tendon, for which there is very little info, and wondered if Font elbow was a similar condition.

Starfish, what does Font elbow feel like?

AFAIK it's Brachioradialis. I think it gets exacerbated by the classic font style stand-up-on-crap-footholds-and-slap-straightarmed-for-a-shit-sloper-so-you-take-all-the-weight-on-one-arm type moves

Do they have a titanium matrix woven in, if not they're bound to be bogus.

I'm not a doctor, but...

Different for different people as far as I can tell, 'pends on what you've been doing - basically painful elbows due to climbing far too much over a one week/weekend period as a result of more enthusiasm than sense.

For me it's an achey pain through the  brachioradialis, especially where it joins the upper arm, accompanied by sharp pain on the lateral epicondyle (tennis elbow). All due to repeatedly doing just what SA Chris said about straight arm slapping/reaching slopers. Very different to the medial epicondyle pain (golfers' elbow) that I get from locking low and hard or latching small edges too much - which I'm sure that some people do too much of in Font.

Bollocks.

It feels like the reasonable price of repeated success

I almost believe myself to be an actual rock climber
