California - good indoor gyms
February 05, 2010, 04:40:37 pm
Well we went for 2 weeks, unfortunately having to come back early 'cos my Mum was very ill, so we didn't make it to JT/Bishop, also weather not great so we stayed on coast. We did go to some good gyms around San Francisco, if you are in town here's what I thought:-

Planet Granite http://www.planetgranite.com/ Good bouldering. Also routes. $13 morning pass. We stayed on Lombard, 30' walk away, and lots of nice places to eat/hang out in Chestnut St. Just S of Golden Gate bridge - you can run from PG looking at the view and then have a shower there
Mission - http://www.touchstoneclimbing.com/ very busy/crowded in the evening and the fewest problems, but good scene & the night I went free doctor for injury consultantion. Also routes. $18 day pass. Wouldn't stay in this area
Bridges, El Cerrito - http://www.bridgesrockgym.com/ New, high enough to be interesting and the least crowded. Went there with Jim Thornburg the photographer, easy walk from BART station.

All these gyms have cardio machines and yoga as well; PG+M also have weights. They all give you towels for showers. Pretty good places to hang out and keep fit I'd say, IMHO the bouldering at PG and Bridges is as good as that at The Climbing Works, though not as big.

ciao Peter
