Some of them sounded like quite tragic cases, betting fortunes on stuff they quite clearly didn't understand ("want to bet on the red one on tellywith a "2" on it" type stuff). Stuck at home watching the racing channel etc and just feeling compelled to punt on sme meaningless US or all-weather meeting to give the day some interest.
