not any fish in the pic, but middle child caught her first fish on rod and line today

here she is just before catching the "bit black, bit wet, bit red, spikey... it's a petrol" perch

she's not 3 yet, but likes to talk about fishing like she's 73

Not bad really

We didn't stay for long yesterday, but it made me think about treating myself to an evening there on my own - especially as my fly fishing urges are being thwarted by shit mobility.

There's something very satisfying about catching those crucians and tench on light tackle.

I usually fish a 2 or 3m whip, but I've got a Des Taylor Pocket Rocket that is giving me a lot of amusement at the moment.

A mixed bag from the beach the other day. From the top down, a dart, a whiting and a yellowfin bream. All very tasty!

had a couple of hours there on my own this afternoon

cracking session catching decent roach on the drop

usual mix of skimmers, perch and a couple of hybrids, but the better roach were beautiful

some crucian action in between

it's a great little venue

WMD is a brilliant little venue! I used to hammer that place when I was a kid, me and my friend Michael used to fish it nearly every weekend for the crucians and tench, Michael even had the two Ghosties out on floating bread. You never knew what you were going to catch when your float went under at WMD, I've had some really nice fish out of there and some big nets as well.

Adam, let me know if you're heading up for an evening I'd love to have session up there it's been too long.

In case you didn't know... it's no longer free to fish WMD

a bloke called Chris manages it (lives near there I think)

£4 for a day or £35 for the year

tench have been hugging the dam wall

this weather has brought the carp up to the top - nice to watch them drifting about

plenty of frog sex going on - much to the delight of that rather bold heron that hangs out there

Caught this last night off Balmoral beach, one of Sydney harbour's most popular swimming beaches! Fought like a rabid pitt bull. Seriously fast fish.

It's a dusky whaler. Bloke in the fishing tackle shop confirmed it. He also mentioned that  one of his mates landed a 450kg bull shark in the harbour a few weeks ago!  :o

Definitely living the dream mono. My count is now 5 dusky whaler sharks. A mate and I got our boat licenses a while ago an hired a boat last week. I landed my first Kingfish. Talk about epic fight. Seriously chuffed. We landed a host of small reef species, including red snapper and the seriously hard fighting silver trevally. All this in Sydney Harbour! Photos to follow...

As promised...
Got all of them on very light gear. We had heavier gear out for the bif kingfish, but only had a few Australian Salmon on the livies.

No idea what this is. Good fight on light gear though.

Nope, still no idea. Some sort of rock cod?

Effort!! Kingfish are one of my dream species to catch along with GT's, Permit and Bonefish. Love watching The Ultimate Fishing Show when they go surface popping for Kingfish. Soooo jealous!!

Kingfish definitely live up to the hype. We were kind of scared we'd actually hook into a big one as our heavy gear isn't really heavy enough. A 40lb fish can strip 400m of 30lb braid off your reel in about 20 seconds, so I'm told.

I went on a holiday with the missus to Hayman Island on the barrier reef and they had 20kg GTs that would take food from your hand at the jetty. It was possibly the coolest thing I've ever seen., No fishing in the marina of course.  I have video of it somewhere. I'll try and find it.

If you ever head up North my brother and my nephew do loads of fishing off Townsville, mostly from kayaks. The advantage of the sea almost always being flat calm.

I'll get their details off you if I'm headed that way Chris. Really want to get amongst the big game species in QLD.

In the meantime, this one's for you fatneck...

Ok so it's not exactly shark fishing, but I recently managed to pick up a match box and 13m Milo pole for £100 and had my first outing at the lake I grew up fishing on last week. Managed  half a dozen skimmers, the biggest being this pound and a half specimen ;)

Delighted with my new purchases, particularly as my elbows are suddenly both screwed and I need a break from bouldering!

Also managed a session at Pigeons Cave last Thursday after hearing reports of mackerel being in and despite the mackerel not exactly being "in" (it's a bit early really) I did manage this mighty specimen which tasted particularly nice :) as well as three small pollack...
