Slayer
October 28, 2008, 11:28:41 pm
I went to see Slayer at the Manchester Apollo last night almost 21 years after I last saw them live at the same venue.  They were f*cking amazing and far, far better than I expected. I'd anticipated a trip down memory lane with a few newish tunes chucked in but was blown away by how tight, brutal and uncompromising they were. A one hour set, a grateful few words from Tom Araya every few songs and then heads down into the next two or three minute scorcher. Into their mid 40's they are just quite simply the best metal band by miles and miles and miles and much more musical and innovative than they ever get credit for. The whole hour was just awesome, fierce riffage, atonal guitar solo's and driving crazy drumming from Dave Lombardo (who makes the band IMHO).

Trivium were absolutely shit, a manufactured boy band of mid 80's hair thrash metal cliche and they were deservedly showered with bottles of piss and beer throughout their set. Mastodon on the other hand were great but Slayer were in a different league.

Have never seen them but always wanted to. Reign in blood is probably the best metal album of all time.
Gutted I didn't know they were on but wouldn't of been able to go as I've been ill

Same here.
£27.50 is a lot more than I paid last time

No obvious clues to support act.

I saw them in cardiff as part of the unholy alliance tour (with hatebreed, mastadon and slipknot). It was towards the end of the tour and they did seem a bit tired. They played an excellent set but you could just tell they were going through motions. They were still head and shoulders above the rest of the bands that played. slipknot and mastadon were awful, mastadon were really sloppy and slipknot worked the crowd into a frenzy and then completly failed to deliver. hatebreed were quite impressive, the music wasnt great but they had a real energy about them that was good to watch.
I would love to see slayer again when they haven't already played for nearly 2 months straight.

I've a hand painted leather jacker with Slayers Divine Intervention album hand-painted on the back...

Been thinking of selling it for a while as I never wear it, anyone interested?

Think its 44" chest. Will get some pics posted tomorrow.

How is Araya's voice? I heard he can't reach the Reign in Blood era highs, what's it like now?

awesome, thought it was this week! Not seen them for about 5 years and have no recollection of how he sounded  :alky:

Gotta have a play through RiB before bed now. I'm still so amazed they had so much mainstream appeal with the lyrics on that record. Such riffs though  Hanneman
