lower bicep issues
August 11, 2008, 01:19:44 pm
Within the last week I've developed a sharp pain between the bottom of the bicep and elbow on my left arm. If i have my palm facing upwards the pain is on the the fleshy bit toward outside of my arm about two inches above the crease of my elbow.

It hurts when I climb and when my elbow is at an angle sharper than 90 degrees. It also aches during movement without load, especially in the morning.

Anybody else had this?

I'm guessing rest and ice are probably a good idea, but if anyone has advice on stretches, exercises or an idea of typical recovery time that'd be really useful.

Cheers,
Nic

it seems like the intersection of the bicep. rest rest and rest. treat you bicep well, give him all he needs to recover. i think stretching is good but not during the acute phase.

and more: drink alot and avoid all the dangerous positions and efforts (bicep curls, reverse grip pull ups) and really take it easy. i've gone through a similar injury years ago, it took around four weeks to completely heal but it finally did.

I have had the same issue on and off since December. Feels like tooth ache in the bicep. The longest I have taken off from climbing is 2 weeks- but that didn`t clear it up fully- so maybe a month off followed by slow build up might be a good idea. I saw a sports physio after two weeks off (so post acute stage) and she said I needed to build up the stress on the area and it was alright for it to ache for 24 hours after the workout. She actually recommended bicep curls and stressed that the important phase is the extension- which should be performed as slowly as possible to maximise the stress on the tendon.

I have had it in both biceps - but my right bicep seems worse- more chronic in nature- I think it might become tendinosis (tendon degeneration) if it is not allowed to heal. I stupidly bouldered hard from Jan to May- using sometimes up to 6 ibuprofin and day to allow me to get on my projects. Try to avoid using ibuprofin as it just masks the injury.

Thanks for the info dave.

I've been resting and icing and the general ache seems to be improving - did some (very) gentle trad last night with only low level pain (no sharp twinges, but some ache). Fingers crossed I've caught it early, might try some controlled reverse bicep curls later...

Cheers,
Nic
