What's my (camper)van worth
February 11, 2013, 11:54:45 am
Due to my wife's car giving up and going to the scrapyard and an attempt to save a little money in the next year we are considering selling the camper van (95% of the journeys now don't involve sleeping in it, also my mum is getting a new car so we get hers v.cheap...)

It is a 2004 Toyota Hiace 2.5 Diesel

Just under 90,000 miles

It's a self convert camper

The cupboards were made professionally by a company in North Wales (Amdro)

Windows fitted professionally (sliders on the sides and 2 on rear doors)

Rest done by me

Doesn't have extra electric (although Toyots do have 2 batteries), no running water or fridge

Very wide double bed in back (full width of van, wider than a king size bed although possibly a little short for 6 fters)

Got roof rack, window covers, levelers for when camping...

pics and link to pics below

(on the pics there is a little 'sink' bit next to the cupboards this was just sat there as I was trying to get it re registered as a camper and you need a sink and water storage among other things. Gave up on re registering as it has got a lot harder so that isn't there anymore.)

pros:
been a very good runner - serviced every year at the nice local garage. Never had a expensive bill, passes mot everytime with no bother

Toyota diesel so goes on for ever

Lots of storage - 'boot' section at back can just fit 2 DMM pads, big boxes (which pull out to make bed) have lots of storage and slide away under bed whilst travelling

Lots of heat and sound insulation

cons:
Outside has a few scratches and couple dents

2 sets of keys (1 for doors, one for ignition) - bit of a long story but vehicle was stolen from first owner then bought by me (with vin number and log book changed) couple of the locks were sticking (prob due to having screwdrivers in them when stolen!) so got replaced and used vin number to get correct locks, as vin wrong got different keys to work the new locks (Toyota dealer did it under warranty so replaced all the door locks free for me) This led to realising it was stolen so then got correct plates etc sorted.

On Auto trader normal 03-04 Hiace going between 2.5 - 5K, they are obv not campers although also obv not got 2 sets of keys!

What do you reckon it might be worth?

I may have missed it but you don't say anything about tax/mot?
How about major services (timing belt, anything else specific to the engine)?
Tyres?

Instead of using autotrader and what other people are selling them for try looking up the book price on parkers (I'm not sure if they cover all vans).

Personally, I'd ask what you'd "realistically" like for it and then advertise slightly above this. You can then gauge interest and lower things down if nobody calls.

The hardest vehicle I've sold thus far (most have sold on first viewing) was my caddy camper conversion. It was in absolutely stunning condition in and out but was such a niche vehicle, there just wasn't enough interest. In the end I think it sold for the general worth of the van with nothing being added by the interior.

This may sound patronising (sorry if it does) but spending £20 on a few car products can really make a good first impression and a big difference with selling.

If they're minor scratches then t-cut might take care of them, follow that with a coat of resin polish (I just used cheapo turtlewax this time and it was really good) and the vehicle will look at its best. It doesn't take too long either.

It looks like a nice van.
