And on a similar tip to above - a 50 min documentary. has some slightly dodgy allusions to 9-11 being an inside job but otherwise very interesting.

sense from simmons
I realise I'm ploughing a lone furrow here, as well as writing myself off as some sort of doomsday nut, but what the hell.

If it makes any difference - I trade energy futures for a living, and this shit worries me.

Cheers Duma, interesting (scary) stuff.

At the same time, expanding research in 'temporal discounting' in economics (called 'impulsivity' in psychology), is shedding light on how steeply we value the present over the future, a trait that has ancient origins. Knowing this tendency, how can we expect factual updates on peak oil and climate change to behaviorally compete with Starbucks, sex, slot machines, and ski trips?
Exactly!

Still banging on your door... :wall:

The recent GAO (US government accountability office) report on peak oil is available here (pdf warning)

Some of the US media reaction can be found here. The peice with Matt Simmons is particuarly worrying - this man knows his onions. Kunstler is good too (mp3 warning)

I know these are a bit US-centric, but consider that in 2000 we (the UK) were exporting 1 million barrels a day, by 2005 we were net importers.

Seriously people, you need to bookmark the oil drum

the energy bulletin is a good clearing house for info too.

Interesting piece on the Guardian website today.  It's about the similarities between the early stages of past fascist regimes and America as it currently is.

Wonder if it was published anywhere in America?  She could be looking at a stretch in the big house if she is to be believed...

For BJ and any others following peak oil (and you all will be soon), here's a piece that was on CNBC this am (US time). That's Hirsch of the Hirsch report, not pulling any punches. Here is a follow up with T Boone Pickens (who just bought $2billion worth of wind turbines).

I'd say this is a fairly big deal, these are both respected and mainstream guys, saying stuff that only a year or two ago would have been considered extreme views, and doing it on a major network.
Oil hit $129 this morning...
