html / css test
February 15, 2008, 06:57:58 pm
I've got an interview in a week or so for a web designers job.. its a cool job and I'd like to get it.. I've been told I'll be tested on my knowledge of HTML and CSS... this is fine but I've been given no more information, whilst I'm confident of my knowledge of HTML etc, I don't really like tests and I guess forewarned is forearmed..

Anyone know of any online tests or online examples of likely test structures with regard to the above?

I've tried the W3schools quizzes but they're a bit basic..

http://www.w3schools.com/quiztest/quiztest.asp?qtest=XHTML

Cheers..

Not a direct link to what you're looking for mate and you probably know of it but www.stylegala.com has been a lot of use to me in the past. Good forum too maybe worth making a repeat of this post on?

Presume you've also been on the CSS Zen Garden site (http://www.csszengarden.com). I have the book kicking round somewhere....

Good luck sorry this wasn't more direct help!

Since it's a web designer role you're after then I reckon if you've got a pretty solid knowledge of html/css and their capabilites (and limitations) then you should be fine.

A web developer role might demand a bit more in-depth knowledge but as a designer you shouldn't be expected to know every obscure css/javascript trick there is, or to be able to memorise the dom, etc. You're there to make the site look slick, not to do the hardcore coding behind it.

Might be worth brushing up on some of the quirks of IE/Firefox/etc

Good luck :)

Cheers for the feedback guys!

Went for the job, but didn't get it! which sucks.. as it was well paid, part-time and about ten miles from caley and the cliff!!!! Oh yeah and really near to the leeds school of medicine! which at first glance seemed to be some form of cross between hollyoaks and casualty!!  As for the interview, well its the fifth one I've had recently, done well in.. but no thanks.. in truth I think I might have been a bit too overqualified for this one (I've got an MA in multimedia..) the panel were asking me if I'd not find the work to boring and stuff like that.. they even alluded to that in the feedback so I figured they thought I was just going to use the job as a steeping stone..

As for the test.. well they asked me to make a page in css that had a masthead, three vertical columns and a footer, sort of easy.. except I was using a pc and that really threw me!! they also asked me some questions in the interview too... basically gave me a sheet of code (written in xhtml) and asked me to point out errors in it.. fairly basic stuff really.. some tags weren't in lower case, alt tags weren't specified for images, no page title.. that kind of thing...

ah well.. on the plus side, the weather has been pretty bueno and until today, caley has been in fine nick.. I've no injuries and plenty of time to boulder and muck bout doing new graphics and learning some more about css...
